Maybe you don't. It may physically residing in the transmission, but is it working? With 28,000 I had mine rebuilt under a third party warranty last August, at ANDIAL in Santa Ana. They had the finese to convince the warranty company that the LSD was covered under warranty.

Since then I ran approximately 2 short track events, very twisty, and 4 track days at the Willow Springs Int. Raceway.

As of last light when I had my car up on jackstands, it appears the LSD is gone. When one wheel is rotated, the other barely moves in the same direction. I am going to have it looked at by a professional. There is one more sophisticated test for function...we;ll do that.

If it is indeed gone , I will replace it with a Quaife,or <img src="graemlins/crying.gif" border="0" alt="[crying]" /> ? I hope your LSD lasts longer than mine apparently did.

Martin,

I have a 1997 C2 with 30,000 miles on the original LSD. I am not an expert on LSDs but I read the shop manual on testing and the coupling between the wheels is speced at 11 ft-lbs with LSD. That is not much force but this is a static test.

When I turn one wheel (in neutral) the opposite barely moves in the same direction but my LSD is working fine. I know that because when I last powered out of a tight 1st gear turn in an autocross my inside wheel was not spinning, I broke both rear wheels loose causing the flagger to jump back!

It seems to me that track events would exert little wear on your LSD. I have never been on a track with a turn so slow and tight that I would need an LSD to prevent inside wheel spin. However, as I said above, I am not an expert on this.

Regards,
George

A good rough check is to look at the near side rear tyre... if it is worn on the outside and the other rear is not it is good evidence that the power is being spun away on roundabouts (circles) and thus the LSD is shot. Wear will build up here becuase all roundabouts are (a) travelled around in the same direction (b) a good place to give the car some extra welly.

Of course this test is less useful in the Land of the Free as you have less stupid roundabouts/circles in the first place.

But anyway... there it is for what it is worth.

(Oh and it is worth stressing that it has to be the nearside tyre, obviously, given the rotation of the roundabout.)

Martin, don’t come to any conclusions until you’ve done the definitive test, the one where the torque is tested right at the hub. I was concerned about my LSD, so when I had my clutch done, I had my mechanic (you know who he is, his initials are Mark Hergesheimer) test it. When I had both wheels in the air, turning one would cause the other to rotate in the opposite direction. This is what concerned me. Mark did the static test and found everything to be within specs. I think the static load is so low (11 ft-lbs) it makes the traditional “turn one wheel and see what the other does” test unreliable.

Hey Tom,

Yep, mine did the same opposite rotation thing as yours. If you turn the wheel very slowly and gently, it will turn the same direction. Weird.

I don't think that Marty has anything to worry about.

You are SOOOO right, I'm afraid. For durability, these pale in comparison to the earlier ones.

I am going to have the torque test done and put this concern to rest. Thanks to all for their responses, once again Rennlisters come through!
