I did a search on this topic on the 993 forum and found a whopping 1 thread.
I went out today to the PCA Auto Cross, to check things out. So, on the way, the CE light came on. Needless to say, the first thing I thought was the carbon build up issue. So, I nervously went out and had the light checked at AutoZone (they offer a free check).
The first time, we couldn't get it to read the codes. Seems that you must deactivate the security system to get the codes. Upon the second attempt, I got P0410. Seems this is a Secondary Air Pump issue.
The guy at autozone didn't even think the device would work on the p-car. But, it did.
So, I have some questions:
Could this be affected by air filters (dirty) or driving habits?
If it is the air pump, how can I check this?
Is this something I can do, or will I need to send it to the shop?
Thanks for the help, guys.

I had the same code on my 1996 993. I changed the secondary air injection valve as recommended by Porsche. The old one was rusty inside but seemed functional. Anyhow I cleared the codes and it has not come back on after 1500 miles.

Thomas, if your car is subject to the wiring harness recall and it hasn't been done yet, that's the time to replace this valve. Mine is also a '96, but it was covered by the recall and the dealer warned me beforehand that if they found a rusty sec. air inj. valve, that that would be the time to do it. They said something like $185 if they did it while they were in there or tack on another two hours to do that job separately later. Luckily, they said the valve was fine and didn't need replacing.
