OT: Car Comparison
While commuting to work few days ago I passed Ferrari 360 Modena on Hwy 101...what a beautiful car
. Being impressed by its appearance I've dived into Internet to gain some info on it. As result of my "research" this chart has been built:
.............................. Ferrari 360............................Porsche 911GT2 (from porsche.com and ferrari.com)
Maximum speed..........183 mph.................................196 mph
0-62 mph.....................4.5 s.......................................4.1 secs
Maximum power...........400 bhp at 8,500 rpm............483 bhp at 5,700
Maximum torque..........373 Nm at 4,750 rpm..............620 Nm at 3,500-4,500 rpm
Weight.........................1,290 kg..................................1,420 kg
If to compare the numbers at this chart 911GT2 looks a bit faster. Aside from those numbers it is probably worth to mention that GT2 uses less gas. It has smaller engine. It is not as "showy" as F360. It doesn't require as much maintenance work as ferrari does. And mantainance work doesn't cost 7000 dollars. The car itself costs much less than Modena. It even could be used as a daily driver! Four seats....easy to drive...bla-bla-bla...

I agree with all your data, but the GT2 is missing two Ferrari features:
1). incredible V8 exhaust note... the best I've ever heard
2). one of the most sensuous body styles ever done (well except perhaps the 250GTO)
Porsches seem to be about as exotic a car that you could REALLY use as an everyday driver. I'd love a Ferrari, but I know I can't afford the upkeep.

I think the main difference between them (aside from theirs technical features) is that Ferrari looks and being perceived by public as a car that costs A $$$LOT$$$..while 911 GT2 doesn't.
A GT2 doesn't have a back seat...
And who gives a crap about gas mileage in an almost $200K sports car. That is probably the last thing that would matter.
Besides that comparing the "base" Ferrari to the GT2 is not fair. You need to compare the 360 Stradale to the GT2.
Last comment, I would say it is pretty tough to declare a winner based on a few statistics. These cars are much more than a collection of numbers. I have not been on the track in a 360 but have in a GT2 and it is an awesome vehicle, but I am sure the 360 stradale is just as impressive.

Post the same comment on ferrarichat.com and you'll be surprised to see a much different reply.

Only issue is actually being able to get a 360 at that price. I wonder if the Ferrari dealers still have a two year wait...

I've just compared the numbers from the chart. I have no personal experience of driving any of those cars. From those numbers it just looks like GT2 faster and more powerful car. And for less money.
By the way...from what I've read on internet...there is a waiting list for new Ferrari. For some models the waiting period can be as long as 4 years

this is a fine example of "magazine racing". People look at the stats and automatically assume something from the given written info. Aside from that, the comparison is pretty biased toward the Porsche, as the 360 Modena is more comparable to a 911 Turbo than a GT2.........as Greg mentioned. The Stradale and the GT2 are competing for the same customer so that would be a much more fair comparison if you're into magazine racing. For me personally, I'd probably take the GT2 over the Modena, but then I'd rather have the Stradale over any Porsche 911 if I could afford the maintenance. Steve also brought up two very valid points, the sound of that small displacement high-revving V8 coupled with the SEX appeal a Ferrari's curves ooze will make many a grown man melt.

1- The GT2 is not easier to drive
2- The GT2 is far more money (for 2004, base price is $192k)
3- The cost of maintenance on the Ferrari is not $7000
4- The GT2 does not use less gas
5- The GT2 does not have rear seats
6- The two cars don't really compare
As to the "showy" factor, I drove my lowly GT3 last weekend and just as many people were looking at it as the 360.

I think it's obvious that on this board the consensus would be for the GT2. But the best bang for the buck is a 993. Any 993. My lowly 1995 coupe with CHROME (I know some of you hate them) wheels looks to the average guy on the street to be a 2000 model year and looks like some $50-60K car to most of ém. I had a BMW driver (acquaintance) ask me in the athletic club parking lot on Monday what my car cost. I did not give an answer because he was guessing $50K.
Last Saturday night we went to a big fancy party and a speed yellow GT2 was parked in front. Which I thought was great. This week at my athletic club several of us were recanting last saturday nights doings. The topic of the gorgeous GT2 car came up and I was raving how nice it must be. One of the guys (who has had at least one Ferrari, currently drives a supercharged XJR, Lotus, and Corvette) said "Yes but most of the party goers don't know that your car is any different from a GT2." This fellow has had some Porsches prior as well.
BTW I followed a new black Maserati down the hill about a week ago and it had a fantastic V8 exhaust note, too.
