Post one more 993 question for the experts....inside,

I looked at 96 c2 over the weekend, the guy had all records but the tires were very worn, allmost junk in the rear. i know the 911's eat rears. the problem is over about 80mph a loud hum came from the rear of the car. i think it may be that the tires are just wasted and out of balance. what else could it be....i will have a dealer check it out if i decide to buy it. thx

Joey,

I cant help with humming.

But Im not sure that you should have the car checked out by a dealer if its an OPC, unless you are very sure that it is reputable and reliable.

Maybe worth asking if there are reputable and reliable independent companies who can PPI the car.

I had a 964 purchased used that had worn out rear tires that had an awfull roar. The brand name was Falken I think. Was told by dealer that it was the tires. Must have been correct because after I replaced the roar was gone. I think it was the brand as much as the wear. I think Tirerack.com has a comparison that includes a noise rating. Mick

Regardless of brand, high-performance tires will be very noisy when worn at least 50% or more.

To my utter embarassment, I discovered that a growl/roar from the hub area, which genius here determined to be wheel bearing related, was actually extreme tire wear, well into the TWI's ( tread wear indicators ).
My tire guy still teases me about it.

you always lift the rear of the car and drive it,if the tyres are pirelli p-zero's they do sound like a wheel bearing failure if wornout

Yo Michael,
I'm here in Santa Cruz also. I was curious as to the idenity of your tire guy. I have a '96 coupe that is begging for wheels/tires (and she won't shut up...) and if I can do it locally all the better.
Thanks
Chris
