Default E-code headlamps

Newbie here, but did actually check the FAQs first, so please be gentle.

We just got a '93 993 in from my buddy's brother's shop (near Kelowna), and it has DOT headlamps (no great surprise). On the trip home, my friend found that he could barely cruise the legal limit without smacking into the deer that line the prairie highways, so we need to do something about the lighting problem.

Although Litronic seems to be the norm around here, low beam just doesn't matter around here - we are either in the city or out on some very empty roads (except for wildlife), and the need is for the highest (physical mounting) illumination source on the vehicle to put out the best long range light. Since a light bar on the roof with half a dozen Super Oscars isn't in keeping with the charactar of the car, I want to use E-code headlamps, so that we can replace the H4s with bi-zenon bulbs, but I don't know what the 993 came with in Euro trim.

Where do I get e-code headlight assemblies for this car (assume they are dedicated, not 7" in adaptive housings)??

Pat

All the 993 assemblies are the same. No separate "e-code" lights. The lights use separate H-1 (not H-4) bulbs & reflectors for the high & low beams. Search for the many threads on improving output for both.

Bottom line: The headlight design is poor, so the only meaningful improvement is HID. Marginal high beam benefits from higher wattage/output halogens. You could easily install aftermarket HID highs, if you can locate a kit.

I'll disagree a little bit with Dan. Putting 100w H1 bulbs in the high beams with power supplied more directly from the battery with heavier gauge wiring via a separate relay does help, and coupled with HID (Litronic) low beams there is actually quite a lot of light on the road when you hit the high beam switch.

Dan isn't too impressed with his 100w high beams, but he is also running them through the stock wiring, which cripples them a bit I think due to the voltage drop through the "lightweight" wiring.

So you can get a genuine improvement over what you have with a bit of money and effort, while still retaining the stock look.

Oh yeah, the relay mod for the high beams is not as simple as it would seem. Ask how I know....

'94 was the earliest I had ever heard a 993 referred to until now.

Since I drive in the dark more than I drive in the fog, I upgraded my H3 fogs to 55w/100 watt output and adjusted them up to the level of the low beams. I also use 55w/100 watt output H1 in the low beam. Have not bothered to do the high beam due to the CW that it does not add much (w/o the wiring upgrade)

OK I need to sort this part out - the car is (was) registered as a 1993, so I will have to look at the serial number and mfg sticker. Also, it has DOT marked lights, which I assume have 9007 bulbs (no obvious 2x H1 reflectors behind the lense). Sounds like what they/he call a 993 is maybe NOT a 993. Thanks for the heads up, time to go do my homework.

Max - where in the GWN (Great White North for the rest of you) do you park when not in CA? Usually people only know M'ville when there is a scandal going on.

Here is a good place to start to determine what kind of P-car you have:

All the best,

Pat, i lived in S'toon for over 10 years...and had a couple of (unfinished) Corvettes stored out near Martensville. the SC is in climate controlled storage in S'toon currentley. I'm one of the people that recentley left (fled?) to AB.

OK, back to the headlight question....

Max:

Ever come to any of the SSCC events?

I flee to AB, WY or just about anywhere there is a contract, but don't actually get to work in SK anymore - just live here. The upside is cost and being only a few blocks from the new kart track.

Have you found a reasonable Canadian 911 parts source?
