Default for $45K, 993 or 997?

I have been considering purchasing a 911 within the next year for around $40-45K. I have been leaning towards a 997S, but it seems like 993 prices have been plateauing for the past 6 months, making the 993 an option as well. The car would not be my daily driver and would only be driven a few times a week. If it was your decision, which would you get? Do you think 993 prices have stabilized, or will they continue their rise into the stratosphere?

Love the 993, but wouldn't complain if it had a little more power (I don't have a turbo), so the 997 has an advantage in that area. Beyond that, I like everything else about the 993, from look, feel and timeless design/classic interior without electronics that become dated quickly.

Regarding future price appreciation, who really knows; so many variables to consider. Don't buy either as an "investment;" what you'll save in depreciation on the 993 you'll have to spend some $ to maintain. If it was me and I went the 997 route, I would only buy the 997.2 (2009 and later). That's a search unto itself.

Have them both and per other threads, I will never sell the 993 C4 and may consider selling 997.1 4S in the future. FYI- my "guaranteed insurance" value on the 993 - $65,000.

My vote would be for the 993, I just picked one up a few months ago. I sold my last 993 back in 2001 and missed it.

If you haven't, you must drive both to decide for yourself. Completely different cars. All of our opinions should make no difference to you. But, if it were me...993 all the way!

I have both as well; an 07s and 95. Both are great cars and you can't go wrong with either. The 997 is more powerful and can get you in trouble (w/ law) very easy while 993 is blast to drive on the twistes. Imo the gen 2 997 is over rated and doesn't make the sounds of the 997.1

$45K won't get you into a very nice 993. For that money I'd look at a 997. $10-15K more and you can end up with a great 993.

Drive both a 993 and a 997 and then decide which one speaks to you. Different strokes for different folks.

You know? IMHO if you have to ask, you just don't get it!

I've owned two 997 iterations (997 S and a TT cab), a gen-1 Spyder and now a 993 C2S. If you are only driving it a couple of times a week i would go 993 100%. It's such a great alternative driver to a more modern car and it's interior is beautifully simple, it goes fast enough to get pulled over but so pretty in design to avoid a ticket (yep - just happened to me). But certainly the 993 is old enough now that you need to have some tolerance (acceptance?) for mechanical / electrical breakdowns. Just check the posts here in this forum and you'll get a taste of them V.s the 997's. The 997.1's big thing of course if the Intermediate Shaft Bearing and not a whole lot more. It has been a very successful model for Porsche.

But the bottom is this: you need go and drive them both and buy the one the lights you up. These cars are emotional buys let's face it.

P.s. Some how I became a "Super User" here but I lost my signature. WTF? Thoughts anyone?

i think the 997 is a great car, but i bet you will be smiling bigger while driving a 993.
