Question Difference between 911 and 993? Can't seem to find it?

Hi All,

I apologize for such and obvious or dumb sounding question. I tried a search on the question twice but could not find it. The 993 looks like a beautiful car and caught my eye recently. Thanks in advance.

All 993s are 911s but not all 911s are 993s.

993 is just an internal Porsche designation of this particular model run.
The one before is a 964 the one after is a 996.

kinda like the C4 corvette and the C5...The "993" 911 ran from 1995 until 1998. 1999 saw the introduction of the "996" series of 911's. The next upgrade is slated to be the "997".

To fill in the picture a bit more, the 911 ran from 1965 to 1989, and the 964 from 1989 (for C4, others began in 1990) to 1994...

This is a bit misleading. At some level they are all called 911's to the present day. My owners manual says 911 on the cover.

To a casual observer looking at the nomenclature on the engine cover, they were called 911's up until 1983, and Carrera's from 1984 to the present day. (some special models excluded, i.e 70's Carreras)

Trivia: I recently read that the last 2 digits of 993 and 996 refer to the announcement years of those 2 models. Not sure if this is true or coincidence.

993's model years are 1994-98 (95-98 in the US). From 99 on is the 996, a very different car.
