Shift **** Removal??
After searching, looks like you have to just yank up, and hope you don't punch
yourself in the face? Is there a better way? Is this technique harmful to shift mechanism? Would a heat gun help? Trying to install my First Function Shift ****. Thanks for your help.

Just make sure you don't have a turbo or 4s that has the screw to keep it in place. If you do then you need to lift up the boot unscrew and it will just lift up very easily.

I read all the horror stories of people having the shift pattern permanently embossed on their foreheads and decided not take the chance of being thus disfigured.
So I put a pillow over the **** and pulled it up into my well padded abdomen. To my astonishment, the **** released without any real exertion.
The whole thing was very anticlimactic.

Rather than pulling from top, slide my fingers underneath and lifted. It came right off!
So here's the pics, great feel. Perfect topper to the GR, and SSK, I installed this winter. Not real happy with the aftermarket boot I used, as I could not cut the OEM unit, but it does the job. Three spoke next.

Are those OEM mats you have? They look really nice and The red stitching is a nice touch.

As far as boots are concerned, there should be an endless supply of oem boots because you only need the section of boot just below the ****. The **** is the only part that gets worn out, so you can buy any old used beat up shift **** and boot and the rest of the leather will be like new when cleaned. People actually throw old shift boots in the garbage, but they are perfect for the function first install. When you cut the leather boot, cut it as high as possible, close to the ****, so that you will have as much leather as possible for movement in all gears.

Sounds like you are speaking from experience, which is good to hear because the neck of an OEM boot looks too narrow to pull the shaft through on the first function install, that's another reason why I've stayed away from the OEM boot. But you're saying it's not too narrow and it works fine right? Thanks
