Post S02 got "screwed"

Noticed a screw head sticking out of my relatively new S-02 (front right)last night as I left the office. I went ahead and drove gently home on it.

The screw is in the tread area, but about an inch from the outside edge.

Anything in particular I need to know about getting a high-performance tire repaired? I've had tires fixed before but never on a "good" tire like this that I'll be driving at high speeds on.

I don't really have a "tire guy" that I've been impressed with so far....

Thanks for any advice...

Chris,

Don't try to pull the screw out, I had the same thing happen to my SO2s and when I pulled the screw out the tire started to leak air. I manage to "plug" the same screw back in and drove my car to a tire shop.

If your tires were hub balanced on the car, please notify the tire shop that you want to them to mark the exact position where the wheel goes to the hub (bolt pathern) and also where the tires in relation to the wheel before they pull it off to patch it from inside.

(BTW assuming that screw went through, you will need to patch the tire from the inside) FWIW. I had one plug done on my SO2 tires with no negative result what so ever. But patch is still better.

Curtis, sorry you got screwed, but what happened to the used tire place. I am going to need tires in the spring. Are they not high on your list anymore?

They are still in place and going strong. They didn't have any S02's in my size when I had to replace the rears a couple of months ago, but they seemed to be well-stocked otherwise.

I don't know if they do repair work....seem to be really focused on selling and mounting. They are a great value and did a good job with mounting and balancing but they also struck me a "one-trick ponies."

I'll definitely try them first when I need tires again.

I may try them on this repair if I don't get the warm and fuzzies from a tire place closer to home....

Are you coming to Sebring this season?

Here's a link to info from TireRack on puncture repair. Yours sounds repairable & properly done should not cause you any problems.

BTW, make sure the shop is careful with your wheel & hand torques your lugs (if they reinstall it on the car).

Dan,
Thanks for the link. That is a pretty good article.

Do you guys have concerns about retaining the "speed rating" on a repaired tire? This is my daily driver but I also run DE's on the same tires.....

Curtis:

I have run several DEs on SO2s that have been professionally patched. No problems whatsoever.

I had the very same thing in a rear tire recently, and had it patched. No problems at all since, and the $20 was better than the $270 from TireRack. I use it daily but not DE.

I took it to Stokes Tires in Santa Monica, who I would highly recommend. They specialize in performance tires, and I felt happier knowing they were experienced, not just taking it to Sears.

.... I realize that CA is a long way from Tampa - just wanted to make the point that the specialist seemed much more knowledgeable about the repair.
