Actually this was on my street car but it did have a semi race suspension with JRZ's and 500 lb springs. I should emphasized that it was barely streetable.
From what I know about Vinnie and how he has prepped his car I bet after he gets to doing a few events he will want 18's so might as well only buy the rims once. You are right that driver's skill will make up more than the difference between 17 and 18's. Most newbies aren't driving hard enough to lean on the sidewalls of any tire.
We can put some 18's on your car EJ, and see if you change your tune.

Been there done that my friend. Never said I wouldn't notice the difference. If Vinnie has a prepped car (never mentioned in the original question) and will race someday, he might as well spend on the 18s and get used to spending money on the tires. You racers really use the rubber.

E.J., the car (96TT) has the PSS-9 system with RS sway bars, but I still drive the car on the street and consider it more of a street car than a "race" car. I'm sure I'd love to learn to race better with a couple of DE during the year but I'm also worried about bent rims in my neck of the woods! I guess 18s seem to be the way to go in order to avoid spending money twice! Thanks guys.

Greg, I'll be in Louisville next week on Monday and Tuesday visiting UPS's hub at the airport...any of you guys around that area, I would love to buy you guys a drink or a meal at the very least for all the help you've given me!

Cheers,

Regarding scratching the rear rims when parking: less likely if you have 285ers than if you have 265ers. This was the main reason why I went for the 285ers.

Vinnie,

I've put 3 DEs on my Yoko AVS Sports (17"BTW) and I think they're great! Less $ than the Pilots or SO2/SO3, but lots of good stick and VERY predictable on the track! Can't comment on the noise...seems about on par with others but haven't done a side by side comparison. Hope this helps

Question

[quote] Posted by Terry :
dc pmark, I think he's right, but I do agree with some posters that a lower inflation improves handling, so I was being the compromising kind of guy my wife would tell you I am. Sometimes I start the month at 36/44 and let it drift back to 34/42 on its own.

Wouldn't this bent easier the side wall on the limit cornering??? The first thing they have taught me at the DE and Autocross sessions was to over inflate two to three pounds of air pressure on cold tyres! Actualy a fellow taught me the trick of the shoe polish marking on the tire which in my case it was around two pounds more at the back and 1 pound more at the front on 17" shod with SO'2,s. When I was running with stock pressures for a session I could see especially on the rears sidewall wear after the run finished.

Any thoughts????? I would imagine that each tyre has dfferent inflation characteristics due to their construction???

DJF, there is not much sidewall on a 285x30/18 to bend, but I can't agree with overinflating, either. The spec 36/44 cold is already hard riding to me, then imagine an overinflated 38/46 cold after a few laps becoming maybe 42/50 and you might be cornering on just a few inches of center tread.

From an aesthetic point of view, I prefer the factory cup 17" much more than turbo twists. Something about the 17" cups that looks classic, yet aggressive. Naturally, you need to lower the car to ROW height (US height is WAY too high)for the effect to really be appreciated.

In addition, with ROW M030 suspension, I find the ride on 17" firm, but very acceptable and I like the extra protection 17" give me. For track performance, 17" work beautifully for me.

Vinnie,
Are you talking about the 25th and 26th? I am only an hour from Louisville, but on Monday I have a two day conference in Lexington and I a dinner on Monday night that will keep me tied up until late Tuesday.
