My research didn't go as far as asking owners for their VIN - but basically before build year T you had a 21, and during T-build you'd have to be really unlucky not to have a 21.
I know of one AWD V-build with a 21 (registered Oct 96), and one RWD T-build with a 20 (registered Sep 96) so it proves the cars built on the changeover months could have had either.

Hi Chuck,
No it's not...I will never depart with that gearbox! And if I even had such plans, you'd be the first I'd contact.
That gearbox is going into my "RSR" now, and this /21 just came out of it.
Thanks for everyone for their comments and also all offers I received via PM. I think we have established quite well that the fair price for this box is 5k.
I will sell it to my friend for that amount and maybe he will chime in and tell us where the box is going into.

What I think is rediculous if someone pays a used gearbox more than 6k. Furthermore I'd say, the strongest part of the 993 ws the gearbox itself, so, comparing how robust and reliable is the gearbox to the unlucky crashed cars that got unfortunatly to be dismantled, there would be for sure a surplus in the offer if there wouldn't be so many obsessed people looking for a /21 just because they read it somewhere... If you are slow, you'll remain slow, if you track the car, the right gearing is the /31, not the /21.
So to me is all about people under sort of brain wash, only because someone said it is cool.
And I would rather say, if you have a /20, it is much better regearing the gearbox you already have, with a 2 years guarantee, instead of investing a similar amount of money for something used, with 100 thousand km, coming from nowhere, without guarantee. Run baby, run.
But hey, it seems people have become same time crazy, irresponsible and billioneire all in a sudden...
My car has been underwater for almost 5 years, the synchros are perfect, I will have a G50/31 custom rebuild and if someone will need the gearing will have only to tell me, we can make a group buy, otherwise I will put the stuff for sale, since I must order 5 sets.
Again, 6k maximum, otherwise I'd go for regearing, as I am going to do, the hardest and most expensive way, hoping to find someone interested in brand new G50/31 gearsets... Otherwise I'll place them on the shelf, I don't think they are going to waste.
Maybe in a 10 years Porsche will raise up its list price for these parts another 100%, who knows...probably I'll really need a bunker

Going for regearing is great- when ou have a 6 speed to start with! For us 964 guys that want a 6 speed the box is the hard part. When I was looking for a 6 speed there was nothing. I used Bill Rader and converted a 4wd turbo box with 40k miles to a 2 speed with gears similar to the /31.

The 5th gear of the g50/20 is for 255km/h GPS, with 250hp...there is also a way to convert the gt3 gearbox for the 964 models.
