Post Driver side window squeaking (Targa)

I was wondering if anyone of you had problems with driver side window squeaking. I am guessing it is because of the friction with something.

If I lower the window a bit, then the noise goes away.

Anyone have any idea what needs fixing or adjusting here?

My car is a '96 Targa with about 30K on it.

Just copying my reply to "samster" when this point came up:

I have a 96 Targa, which I specifically test drove to check the noises. At that time the car was almost completely quiet. Only now, I realize that with very humid weather (it was very foggy when I did the test drive) the car is very quiet, as all the contact points are moist. When it is very dry, some squeaks are audible. I second the observations from "Redtarga", and have applied a little lubricant along the edges of the windows, where they contact the rubber, as I also noticed that opening the windows a little eliminated the noise. The effect of this was stunning: no squeaks with windows closed

Hi Barney!

Polar Silver Targa is really beautiful, it was actually my first preference, unfortunately the owner did not want to sell.

I was hoping that someone had some success stories on reducing squeaks in the Targa's, and could share them with us.

By the way, did you install a front strut bar to reduce the squeaking.

One other way I reduce the squeaks is by opening up the top, then the sweet engine roar just drowns up everything else!

John,
You may already know this...the window can be adjusted. I have the problem of the window sitting a little too high, and my local dealer said that they adjust the windows all the time. He also said it was not inexpensive, as they have to remove the inside door panel.

I've had some luck with wiping every piece of rubber seal that I can reach with some silicone lubricant. Really seems to do the trick but it only lasts about six weeks before you need to do it again.

I think I also need to replace the door seals to reduce some wind noise but I'm not excited about the $400 cost so am procrastinating.

Have you guys adjusted the "flip up" portion of the roof to address wind noise? It sounds to me like it is "leaking" air and I was prepared to adjust it down a bit but the manual suggests that its proper alignment is a mm or two above the main glass.

Almost the entire Targa population is involved here, well almost. Redtarga, to answer your question: No, no front strut bar is installed. Curtis also uses a silicone lubricant, and I agree with him that it is not a permanent solution. I refresh the layer every time I washed it off when cleaning the windows, but reapplying it is no problem. I'm also looking into something that you can treat all accesible rubber parts with that might cause a squeak, e.g. between the two roof parts. But those squeaks will have to wait until I get the Zymol product for rubber treatment. I don't think that you should just treat the rubber parts with whatever you have in your garage. I hope you've also lost the window squeaks with the windows closed.

Kind of irrelevant question, but I will ask anyway. Did anyone of you bought the Targa new? Was there much squeaking during the first year or two?

I appreciate the suggestions that all of you provided, so I am going try all of them (even ask my garage for a quote on window adjustment).

I had used Silicon spray from 3M (can't remember the exact name, though), it didn't help that much. Maybe it was the way that I applied it (just spraying it). Next time, I plan to spray onto a sponge or something, so that I can put more of the stuff on, without getting it all over my seats.

As for the noise from the top two piece of glass, well, nothing due to wind, but during slow driving on uneven roads, I notice it more.

Only small complaint I have about my Targa is the squeaky noises. If I can get rid of them, then it will be almost perfect.

This archived thread may be of interest. BTW, the Wurth product is excellent for keeping rubber pliable and lubricated.
