pulley shims and the correct size triple square bit with a socket wrench. From all the threads I've read the alternator belt seems to be the biggest show stopper besides normal spare tire/oil, etc. Also a small 12V compressor if youre carrying the normal unaired spare.

A small medical kit is always nice. I used the stock one in my Audi more than once for various reasons. Plus what everybody else said if you want to be prepared for anything.

Before you go, check that your tyre pump actually works. May be an obvious one, but given the age and that a lot of these are never used (based on the condition of my spare) worth checking.

You mentioned DME relay. Mine packed up in the Scottish Highlands 30 miles from civilisation. Fortunately I was carrying a spare.

Personally, for most trips I'd take only DME relay, belts , complete Porsche tool kit, lighting and AAA card. That being said, I take into account where exactly I'm going. A west coast trip would be light and a trip to the Yukon would be heavy. I do a lot of >2000 km mountain trips in both the 96 and the 85 and have never been stranded yet.....close, but not stranded (touch wood). Anyway, have a good trip.

I am not so sure the Porsche tool kit has enough to change the belts. When the fan belt breaks, you are dead in the water unless you want to kill your engine.

You need the triple square bit and a 24mm (?) wrench to remove the nut. And it is on usually really tight. So you need a breaker bar/tube to slip over the triple square tool. And a long enough 24mm wrench to crack open the nut. Then you need the hex key to remove the 3 hex bolts to change the inner belt.

Don't forget the 13mm socket to remove the AC belt.

Special Porsche tool can be replaced with a generic tool (triple square?).
I would also check that it fits. That bolt is quite dirty and rusty.

If you've never changed the belts before it would be a good idea to practice it once in your garage before taking an extended road trip.

I was thinking of going down this route which at least gives me an insight and a chance to loosen any seized fasteners. I suppose by changing the belts beforehand it should help to eliminate any failure but Sod's law says that is not a given. At least the older belts can become the spares.

Lots of other useful info to think about and add to the list. I have a set of 16" cup wheels of which one could have a cheapo tyre installed and thrown in the back, better than the space saver admittedly but a pain in the backend if you don't mind the pun, we will see nearer the time.

I'm looking forward to the first long drive after recent ownership and I trust the good old Porsche reputation to make the trip very memorable.

Thanks so far.

You might also do the A/C adjuster lock nut mod or carry a set of diagonal cutters to get the A/C belt off. You can't get to the other belts till you get that one off.

There is a thread on here somewhere listing collars of that size that you can get from McMaster-Carr.

When I hit the road again this spring I am throwing in an alternator and fuel pump. Oh, yeah, and a spare wheel. The belt tools and belts are a must. I wonder why I know?
