Default Is Your Shop Insured?

If your car is in a shop and the shop burns down who pays?

Here's an article I just completed on this topic.

This is my friends 86 Andial 930, with 12k original miles. Was on a lift, above a car that caught fire in a shop. Horrendous process to get it fixed. Unscrupulous owner of shop, tried to foot blame on others. Then found that he was going to try and steal parts from the car before he was caught.Name: image.jpg

Some years ago a friend of my Dad's had a nearly new 7-series BMW totaled when it fell off the lift at the dealership. A protracted legal battle ensued because the dealership refused to accept responsibility for what happened. Eventually the car's owner got in contact with somebody important at BMW Canada's head office, who sent someone down from Toronto to investigate. The final outcome was that BMW Canada (not the dealership) replaced his car, and the dealership rights were taken away from the business in question, which remains a Volvo dealership to this day.

Excellent question to ask your indy point blank, I was floored at what my chosen shop pays in insurance but he needs to cover his *** based on all the expensive iron he services on a daily basis.

And yet we get bitch, bitch, moan, moan about how every shop is in it to rip off the customer. Professional businesses cost money to operate. Most owners seem to check their financial logic at the door.

(Yes, I was absolutely underinsured running both of my shops in the prior life.)

The fault doesn't presumptively lie with being "under insured", as much as it does in the cost of actually being insured enough. Especially in this God forsaken state.

The cost of insurance is one reason shop rates are so high.
