Default Question about front brake part #s

About a year ago, I ordered some 993 brake pads based on a special I saw in Excellence. The brake pad part# I received is 993 351 993 04.
These pads are a bit different than the correct pads for the N/A 993, 993 351 993 01 in that they don't have a slot going down the middle. In other words, the pad is continuous and there is no break in the pad material like I am used to seeing. Otherwise they are exactly the same.

My question is... can I use these? What is the purpose of the slot in the middle. My guess is to let the brake pad material have an escape route under hard braking??? Anyway, I would like to use the 04s if possible, as they are just sitting/collecting dust and I need to change the front pads.

thanks
