Post Noisy front end.

My 1996 993 Targa has developed a "scraping" type
noise in the front end. This only occurs when slowly going over bumps. This almost sounds like the tires are rubbing somewhere, or the shocks are "squeaking". I can only liken the noise to maybe worn rubber bushings somewhere, as the tires show no evidence of rubbing in any location. Can anyone help me to determine what
this is?

If you think the shocks are squeaking then try pushing both front ends to find out. I would also check the swaybar links and mounts. Did you hit anything or ran over anything?

If the occurrence started with the cold weather, it's most likely your front sway bar bushings. A lube should eliminate it ... at least for awhile

BTW, if it is just the bushings squawking, it's not an emergency repair - it's just annoying.

Randy,

Dan is right. It's almost certainly your sway bar bushings. The problem is exacerbated by cold or wet weather. Porsche's Technical Service Bulletin #9605 addresses this problem, and recommends the following:

- Lubricate the interface between rubber bushing and steel bar with Vaseline.

- Consider changing the bushing to 964.343.792.22 (M030 and Turbo), 964.343.792.21 (Standard), or 964.343.792.20 (M 491)

As of the following VIN numbers, a different bushing was used ("with a reduced preload" according to the TSB):

- WP0AA2 99 7 SS 32 3709 Coupe
- WP0CA2 99 7 SS 34 2592 Cabriolet

Have a great weekend!
