Default Loose shift ****

The top metal part of my shift **** is loose. At the diagonal line where the metal meets the wood it moves about 1/8" either way. I don't see or feel any set screw. Am I missing something? Is there a way to tighten it?

There are screws under the shift pattern. I don't have this ****, but I think you can remove the whole ****/boot, and then poke the shift pattern cover off from below. That should expose the screws that fasten the two **** halves together.

I finally got around to pulling my shift ****. Here is what I found. I'm not sure if I should try to pull out the center metal sleeve. Otherwise, I can't see or access inside to pop off the shift pattern piece.

Any suggestions?

The set screw set up looks like jury rig to get a weighted shifter on non turbo, The shift rod on your car has a narrower tip (rod that extends out of the transmission housing) If you can remove that set screw, you then should be able to punch the cap off the top. Maybe someone who has done this can chime in here.

I use a jewelers flat blade screw driver with a thin piece of paper over the tip so as not to mar the shift pattern cap, to pry off said cap. Works like a champ for me.

I've tried the small screwdriver, but there just isn't any room to get it in between with out scratching. It seems like the metal should come out of the wood, but i'm afraid if I do that, I might break something or it will not go back correctly.

Have you tried some floss? Or high strength fishing line?

Id be willing to bet the metal and wood separate too, but not till the cap comes off.

Follow this thread: https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...hift-****.html

You have to pop off the top piece from the small hole at the bottom of the shift ****. Just did mine today...tight up the two screws under the the top piece and fixed my loose ****. Hope this helps!

Ill try a long screwdriver (I cannot see a screw) or hitting it out from underneath. I tried the jeweler screwdriver & it broke. So, either it it glued or there is a screw.

Thanks.

There is no screw holding the top plate, but it's glued to the **** with some kind of silicon glue. You have to use a thin long screwdriver and hammer the top plate out from the bottom. I forgot to take pictures last night, this is from the thread I posted above..

Gav,
The POS China jewelers screwdrivers are NFG for this, or any other task at hand...

If the cap is plastic, you may be ok popping it out from the bottom, but if it's alum, I'd use some padding so as not to pimple/dimple the cap from the bottom.

Success!! Got the shift pattern/cap off!! Hit it from underneath. No screw, only press fit with a little glue. The cap is heavy solid metal. Just like akrca4's pictures.

Thanks!
Now does anyone know how to polish or refinish the 2 metal pieces?
