Default OT: Timing belt change on '96 Accord

Guys,

Sorry for going off topic.

My wife took her car into the dealer because the check engine light came on. That's covered under warrant (fortunately) but the service mgr tried to talk her into getting the timing belt replaced. I looked at the maintenance schedule but could not find anything for '96 Accords.

I know its a PITA if the thing breaks. Does anyone know when this is due? The car is a 4 banger with 90k miles.

Many thanks.

Timing belts are on a 60K interval, so you are either 30k miles too late or too early.

It is not just a PITA if they break, they are interference engines and will be basically detroyed if the belt breaks.

Be sure to change your water pump/thermostat at the same time... Usually, the timing belt runs the water pump and they usually go about the same time. Even if it doesn't the parts are cheap anyways, it's the labor that's expensive.

I have a friend that let his late 80's Honda Prelude go way past the time when the TB should have been changed. Resulted in a $2500 repair. All the valves were bent and a couple pistons were damaged also.
Not pretty.

To echo what others have said, if the timing belt/water pump isn't changed it is a time bomb waiting to explode. I have a 93 Acura Legend as my spare car and according the manual it is supposed to be changed at 90k. I would assume that the same would go for your Honda even though it is 3 years newer. The downside of all this is that it can cost about $700 depending on where you go. Good Luck.

It's either 90,000 or 105,000 miles. My old '93 Accord was the former and my Aunt and Uncle's '97, the latter.

I have a 94 Civic EX that is my daily driver. I had to get the TB/Water Pump before the unfortunate things happens. Get it done, it's a must. plus with an Accord, you probobly have another 50-70K miles of life on the car.
