Locating Radar Detector
What is the black arc at the top of the windscreen, and does a radar detector ( unfortunately only a Bell at this time ) need to be installed below this or is it transparent to the radar beams ?
Thanks

I would mount it below this black spot you speak of. I have a Bel980 and it is a great detector. It has saved me many many times. Especially going down I-5 to Cali.

Ideally I would like to put it up close to or on the roof so it is less obvious but I can't figure out whether the radar beams will pass through the black section.
Where have you mounted yours ?

I have mine mounted via the suction cups in the lower center of the windshield. It also has a direct shot through rear window for rear laser detection.

Yeah, I'm with Randy...I don't worry too much about being conspicuous or not...a shiny 911 gets attention with or without radar...either I'm speeding or I'm not, I'm caught or I'm not...I need to see that sucker though.

Tell me about it. Mine's red

Randy and JPS are both right..My V1 is installed right below my mirror with the suction cups. My big key to mounting it close to the mirrow was being able to hide the wire...I hate wires!!

My V1 is mounted just above the dash, where it can "see" out the back window, plus it is easy to see and to hit the mute button. I hard wired it, and tucked the wire in the trim at the base of the windshield. Nice and clean. No more dangling cord and no more dead batteries.

Any pictures out there of installed units ?
I want to hide the wires and if it can't go up above the rear view mirror ( what is that black arc ?) then the second best place is as low down as I can get it with a path still out of the back .
Alternatively I could just slow down ! thats not going to happen is it ?

reltub, there is a DIY on this at p-car.com . Also, when the archives are back functioning tonight, there are posts from Dan in St. Louis about attaching the main unit above the mirror.

Here is a picture of mine on my windshield. I dont even use the visual part of the radar since I have the hidden display but I have to say it is right in front of your face if needed...might be a good choice for the passport.

Thanks for all the help. The Valentine unit is samller than the Bell but I will try to find somewhere it will not obstruct my view and can be made to look neat

My V1 is mounted on the visor with the supplied visor clip. Radar detectors are illegal in Ireland so it's well out of the way from prying eyes but still has enough room for detection to the front and rear.
I had a Bel 990 originally. The V1 is a big step above.
