Anyhow, Catz has informed me that NHTSA has required them to perform a recall. Because the HID kits did not conform to NHTSA specs, they were deemed "unsafe". This is not just Catz, but ALL afgtermarket HID kits.

The Catz kits are of the highest quality out there, and I myself am not giving up my kit, but there is an option if you choose to do so.

Catz is offering a refund if you send the kits back. This is NOT required and is fully voluntary. If you send your kit back, you WILL NOT receive another kit and you will NOT have an option of buying another one. Keep that in mind.

On a brighter note, I now carry Sylvania Silverstar High Performance Halogen bulbs in H1. If youre looking to improve your lighting but cannot go HID, these are a good and inexpensive alternative.

I guess Sylvania still hasn't gotten the message about the recall. They are still advertising their Xenarc HID kits on their site. And they claim they're legal!

Actually, Xenarc kits are legal. They have a completely redesigned housing made for HID...

All kits that have a replaceable bulb falls under the "non-conforming" product recall

Curious to know how people are planning to respond to the recall. I like my Catz and am loathe to part with it. I'd like to know how the rest of you guys plan to act.

I know I am keeping mine in both my E36 M3s and the Vette...

These are quality kits that should last a VERY long time... I would rather sell the kit than to send it back... these things are worth more than gold

Hell yeah I'm keeping mine!

This is a top quality kit, distinguishable from the factory Litronics only by the extra $1500 dollars in my pocket. Just because some hand-wringing busy-body bureaucrat decided they don't like it is no reason to suddenly think any less of the product.

Technically, many of the mods we make are "illegal." For example, here's an excerpt from the CA vehicle code:

(3) No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the engine of such vehicle above that emitted by the muffler originally installed

So technically Maxflo's and RSR's are illegal too.

Any ECU upgrades that I'm aware of are "off-road only" and therefore illegal.

Any exposed roll bar in a street vehicle is illegal.

And yes, it's possible that I occasionally might exceed a posted speed limit too.

I could go on and on. The wooly-headed socialists in their Priuses and Insights are irritated by us gearheads. As far as I'm concerned, that makes my mods just a little bit sweeter.

If anyone wants to chicken out, let me know and I'll give you 50 bucks for your kit so I can have a spare.

how about a group buy on the silverstar bulbs?

couple questions on those bulbs...

1) do you have a 70Watt+ version?
2) i know that some bulbs change the focal length which is really bad on a 993 since we have projector lights. do you know that these silverstar bulbs focus correctly?

Boris... sure. But the price wont be THAT much less... I already sell them well below what stores and Sylvania does.

For reference, Sylvania sells for $43 a pair. I sell for $34.

A group buy price would likely be in the neighborhood of $30

If interested, I will set it up in a new thread. I have about 10 sets in stock right now, but will need to order more if we plan a GB.

The focal length is correct on these. These are standard wattage and will not harm your wiring or housings....

PeterS, I hear ya.. I somehow think this also has something to do w/ the OEM part makers too and some larger conspiracy... I mean.. like you said.. whoever makes Litronics is out $1500....

Ive got 100W and 70W. Keep in mind that like 1Gunner said, these will generate a LOT more heat and could possibly damage wiring and/or housings. Do this at your own risk. Higher wattage bulbs also burn out faster.

I'm also keeping mine. The difference in visibility is a huge safety advantage. I would like to meet some of these politicians in a dark alley and then we could have a man to #$%$& talk.

Sorry to rant, but I'm just tired of all the BS that politicians make in this world and then quikly vote for their own pay increases and bonuses as they head home for a 2 month recession. Where does that actually happen - I would like to implement pay increase voting as part of the balloting process, as they are supposed to actually work for us. I've never been able to vote my own pay raise in the "real" world.

Sorry for the waist of bandwidth, but this kind of stuff makes me mad!

A 70w bulb will do fine with the stock wiring. We will not have to put relays in for those bulbs. How much would a group buy be for the 70w bulbs?
