Why do 993 tranny's blow? (just some Idea's)
ok, I was just wondering what kills 993 transmissions really fast.
1. Droping the clutch and spining the tires? (in first gear)
2. Going from 1st to 2nd gear really fast (Like 1st gear redline. then Clutch in 2nd gear just letting the clutch pop out not easing it out)
3. Sliding around turns under power.
4. Changing gears when sliding sideways. (also powering the car really hard without easing back out the clutch)
5. doing donuts.
Thats about all I can think of that you could do to kill a tranny? so witch one kills the tranny the fastest? Because from what I know on other cars most tranny's can take this abuse atleast 300 times or so...

Just some thoughts:
1. (dropping clutch and spinning tires): if the tires are spinning, the stress on the gearbox is relieved. Transmission don't like drag slicks or AWD for this reason (too much bite).
2. (powershifting): very hard on synchros and potentially a gear-breaker.
3. (sliding around corners under power): would accelerate wear on your LSD (if you have one)
4. (shifting while sliding around): Adds issue 2 to issue 3. No new issues.
5. Adds issue 1 to issue 3. Nothing new.
Have you ever gotten a gear PARTIALLY selected? Normally, the gear lever pops out of gear with a little grinding, and probably no harm. But combine that with #2, and disaster could be looming. Downshifting without double clutching tends to wear synchros faster, but shouldn't do any gear damage.
I would be more likely to think that your premature gearbox breakage was due to a faulty part or improper assembly in the first place.
And I disagree with JimBob... I don't think this is a stupid thread. But I would like the answer to his question about sheep in Ohio.

Actually Jimbob we don't have sheep. Well I know when I shift I always make the gear perfectly never miss a shift and never grind them. I personaly think that 1st-2nd gear power shifting is what kills porsche tranny's the fastest. Here is why. 1st gear is set up in this direction <- ok? and so when you smash the accelerator you push the main shaft away from the gearing ->. 2nd gear is the oposite direction -> and when you smash it the main shaft goes <-. so you are basicly taking the main shaft in the transmission and yanking it both directions with alot of force. And since the 993 has all that rear weight unlike a mustang you don't spin the wheels insteed you yank the **** out of the main shaft jerking it back and forth each time you power shift 1st-2nd gear. Each gear after this isnt important because the torque just isnt there to really harm anything. There is a name for transmissions like this but I forget what they are called were each gear has a //// direction and then the next gear is like this \\\\\ ? ok I dont think you know what I mean... anyways I know a 944 tranny is like this is a 993's?

Considering I have 76K miles on my tranny (and clutch) with no problems - and have found the tranny to be among the most trouble-free I have ever experienced since my first car (a 1970 Austin America) including two Porsches with the 915 style tranny, here's my opinions.
1. Dropping the clutch and spining the tires? (in first gear)
I drop clutch enuf to just get a tire chirp; good enuf for 1st place at autocrosses I participate in.
2. Going from 1st to 2nd gear really fast (Like 1st gear redline. then Clutch in 2nd gear just letting the clutch pop out not easing it out)
Only time I do this is at autocrosses, so that's maybe 30 times a year (5-6 runs/xcross, 5 autocrosses/yr - you do the math).
3. Sliding around turns under power.
Only times I do this is if I screwed up at the track or I'm trying to get around a tight turn at an autocross (crank the wheel and lift off the gas, so I ain't under power).
4. Changing gears when sliding sideways. (also powering the car really hard without easing back out the clutch)
I NEVER do that!!!!!! Shifts occur in straight line only. Had that pounded into my feeble brain over many driver's eds at tracks (along with keep your danged foot off the brake when cornering).
5. doing donuts.
I let Krispy Creme and local bake shop "do" dounts (unless you mean me at rare weekend breakfast). Car never does them; it ain't a junk Mustang or Camaro.
How often do you change tranny oil? With me, it's every 30K miles.
Face it; you bought a quality GT car that's intended to get on a back road and drive like you're at the Mille Miglia. You want a 1/4 mile drag queen, buy an old Mustang.

It was just some idea's on what might kill the car's tranny. Do 993 wheel hop? and do they do it when pushing a car in a tight turn with the power down?... Maybe wheelhop kills tranny's?

I think that you've asked a question that needs a little definition in order to answer. What do you mean by "kill" or "blow"?
There many parts in a transaxle, that if they broke or otherwise became inoperable would cause a partial or total lack of function from the transaxle.
Click on "My Profile" at the top of the page, and check for a Private Message that I've sent you. I think you will find a reference to someone, who if he has the time, can answer just about any transaxle question you might have.
What were you doing when you transmission "blew", and what loss of functionality does it now have?
Cheers,
