Welcome to the list! 18" wheels can fit on your car, but it is recommended that you fit a brace to strengthen the steering column. See this thread:

Welcome to Rennlist!
Why would you need new tires? Unless they need replacement because they are worn then it is much better to stick to what you have and start learning the car as is. The point of a DE is not to be the fastest guy but to learn how to drive your car faster and safer, to learn the dynamics of your car. So stick to your normal 17's, heck I race on stock 17's. If the tires are worn then I would recommend the Pilot Sport Rib from Michellin as a replacement.
Good luck!

Has your car gone through tech? You should have fresh brake fluid (many folks I know use ATE blue or gold) and adequate pads. I second Danny's comments. If this is your first DE, it'll be a while before you'll really need dedicated track tires. I would put safety equipment like harnesses ahead of track tires. That's currently on my to-do list for next season.

As for 225 vs. 205, read this thread:

ksjcorpus,

Are you doing a DE or just going on a member day? Are you going to MSR?

Yes I have the 225/45/17 front. It helps a bit with understeer although as I have found out , understeer is a difficult beast to tame
Get out there and have fun... you dont need to burn the timesheets so to speak, just learn to drive your car safely and the rest will follow over time. Some people move to R compound tires and they are not exactly ready. R compounds will behave more ubrupt at the limit than streets, so that alone plus higher speeds would translate to trouble if you are not ready...

Enjoy!
