Hi folks, my 1996 C4 developed an issue where once hot, if left for half an hour would refuse to start. There is just a sort of wheezing/whirring sound then a clunk from the starter . Come back later and it starts or if you don't leave it too long.
I notice that there isn't always a hum from fuel pump when ignition moved to first position. Other times there is an audible hum. Does that mean anything?
Things I have done:
New earth strap in luggage area.
Cleaned contacts on starter earth up near rear shock tower.
New distributor, rotors , plugs and new wires have already been fitted .
New ignition coil.
Is this inevitably the starter do you think or is there anything else I should try?

Was this work done as an attempt to fix the problem or did the problem manifest itself after this work? In which case I would double check all the connections. I think there is a DIY to test a coil too. I had a friend with a motorcycle that wouldn't hot start and ended up being coil.
I assume you tried a different DME relay already although not mentioned.

Thanks good question. It existed before all this work but less frequent. Yes ive tried new dme relay before all the above was done.
Can it be the starter motor? I had similar issues. Once hot, when I stop the car I wasn't able to start it again... it happened twice and the first time it started normally after an hour. At 130k miles rennlisters told me it was not surprising.
