Default How dirty should an air filter get?

I have nearly finished my first DIY service (all except for the spark plugs which my mechanic was welcome to do!)

When I removed the air filters (engine and climate control), they looked pretty bad. Looking closely, the old ones had a '98 date stamp and the new ones have '02. You can't really draw any firm conclusions but it's quite likely that the old filters have been in there for 4 years!

Is this amount of difference normal (see photo)? The air conditioning seems to run a lot stronger after the change, and the engine seems a little louder and more eager, but imagination is a powerful thing

Hi Graham:

A good rule of thumb is that if you cannot see light through an air filter, its time for replacement.

Graham

the plugs are not as hard as everyone says - not on my 964 anyway. Mind you, I had my cat & secondary muffler off to do the valves!!
