Found a 993 Good deal??
Good evening Renn Listers,
Looking forward to my fist P-car and found one I think to be a pretty good deal and a great first Porsche.
1998 Carrera Targa
32k miles.
Wine red/tan interior
6 speed manuel
1 owner
All service history
No accidents
zero rust
$41,000
I have not driven the car yet or seen it but the owner says your not going to be disappointed. Pending a PPI on the car does this sound like a good deal? Thank you for any advice you can give me.
thank you

Thanks for the prompt responses. I never keep cars much past a year and then I will probably sell it. If I properly maintain it and do all the need services on the car chances are I won't lose much when I sell it right?
Are the Targa's not as desirable as some of the coupes?
thank you

A fine color combo, one of my favorites! As others have said, sounds like a good deal, pending PPI. You can quickly dump money into these cars if you don't work on them at all, so be aware. Fewer miles doesn't necessarily mean less issues to be had.....maintenance is king. ahh...re-read show "full service history" VERY good start...read through all of it. You can have all the records, but nothing much being done, so double check.
I would get a (refundable) deposit down on it asap and get it to a PPI.

You will lose thousands of dollars. 1. You will lose the sales tax and license fee. Call some dealers and pretend you want to sell them the car and see what they offer you. 2. The Targa is the least popular of the 911 models. And the glass roof is very expensive to fix and service. 3. The price would be fine for a straight coupe in excellent condition or an exceptional cab (if you love cabs) but that price is absoluted top dollar for the best examples on the planet. There are lots of people asking more...but they aren't getting their price.

Oh good. John is back to ****ting on 993s. How's the 996 market treating you?

Just to add some balance to Johnny Irish's post.
The good: The targa roof system is functionally awesome. It's quiet, open or closed, and gives an awesome feel to the interior. If it's hot, just close it up by pressing a couple buttons and you have a coupe. Also, driving or riding in a targa on a clear night or in the rain is a special experience.
The bad: When it breaks, you'll be in for a headache and out a chunk of cash for parts. No way around this.
The FUD: Ignore anyone that says the added weight of the targa causes poor handling in any situation other than building a dedicated track car. Also there's a lot of fud out there that the targas must only run the small, heavy, OEM wheels designed to slow the car, absorb bumps, or some crazy nonsense.

Although I find it hard to imagine going through the effort to buy and sort a 993 with a temporary mindset. The 993 is car you keep.

But I also would not buy a 993 for a year now. Than again, I have zero advise to someone who just wants to flip a car. On the other hand, I bought my first 993 when I was happily unemployed, had no money, had no clue about 911s but simply knowing that the deal was good enough that I can always sell it for more than I bought it for. That was 11.5 years and 7,161 Rennlist posts ago.
