Default DIY - Front Brake Job

This post covers how I did my front brake job. In it are the instructions
for how to replace the brake hoses, pads, and rotors plus how to flush
the brakes and clutch.

It is specific to my car, a 1997 993 Coupe, so if you are doing a different
car be sure to double-check the parts you need.

I also use some very specific special tools, but you can substitute as you
need to your preference.

I did the job on jack stands in a parking lot a few miles distant from my
home. I completed the brake job in one day and did the brake flush the
next day.

I used all standard Porsche parts and did not do any special pad bedding.
After about 75 miles of city and freeway driving I felt the pads were bedded
in and 1/2 week later the pedal modulation is excellent.

Attached are 3 PDF files: Instructions, Parts & Stuff, Brake Flush Procedure.

There are about 60 photos in a photo album shared via Google here:

I am in the process of captioning the photos but most should be self-explanatory.

Let me know if there are any questions.

Great write-up. Should be really great with captioned pictures. Relating pix to number(s) of the steps in the verbiage would be nice.

Got the captions put up for each of the pictures. To see the captions,
click on the info icon (white circle with an "i" inside) and the info panel
appears on the right. When you hover the cursor over the icon it will
say "Open info".

Google changes this photo app like people change underwear. Each
time I use it the user interface has changed.

Also, I wanted to provide a contact address for anyone wanting to look
into ATE brake products here in the U.S. No affiliation, but I use and
recommend their products. They are not stocked in the U.S. so plan on
anything ordered taking time to arrive.

As usual, excellent job and thank you for documenting the process in such detail.

Quick question, why the 2 different kinds of anti-seize? Why aluminum between the rotor and hub and copper everywhere else?

Thank you! The workshop manual specifies Optimoly TA for the hub and
caliper cross spring and Optimoly HT or Plastilube for the caliper brake pad
guide surfaces.

Optimoly TA is 000-043-020-00, a 100 gram tube, and the retail price is $35.37
discounted to $23.22 at Sunset. It is an aluminum-based paste.

Optimoly HT is 000-043-004-00, a 90 gram tube, and the retail price is $31.07
discounted to $22.29 at Sunset. It is a copper-based paste.

Permatex Aluminum Anti-Seize, a 8 oz bottle, and the retail price is $7.26 at Amazon.

(Permatex also makes a copper anti-seize lubricant, 8 oz for $10.23 at Amazon)

Liqui Moly LM 508 Copper Anti-Seize paste, a 100 gram tube, is $8.62 at Amazon.

All of these lubricants are high temperature.

The Permatex aluminum paste is rated -60 F to +1600 degrees F.

Permatex copper paste is rated -30 F to +1800 degrees F.

Liqui Moly copper paste is rated -30 C to +1,100 degrees C ( -86 F to +2012 F)

I made the substitutes based on composition rather than temperature range.
But as to why Porsche specifies one or the other I don't really know. I think
that if you use either one you will be better off than using none at all.

Updated the Parts list as the original did not contain the brake
damper plates.
