Aaahhh...the tease continues.

When will we get to see the 1000lb carbon fiber 993?

Awesome job. Pieces of art as usual...

Robert - delightful stuff, as ever. I remain in respectful awe of your project.

Rezal - while there may be a 1000lb carbon fiber 993 somewhere, you'll understand (I hope) a certain amount of delight from a 964 owner that Robert's project centers around a 964 (albeit a very special one). Don't get me wrong - I love 993s (and all air-cooled Porsches), but the 964 has become the poor cousin in so many ways to the 993 that it is nice to see one being taken to the ball!

And I'm now donning my flame-proof overalls!

No flames here...love the 964...in some ways still the "classic" line of the Porsche. Of course, having owned a 993 now, not sure I'd change for a 964, but love them both. Cheers!

BTW...Robert...do you have an end weight goal, and I'm curious how far along you are towards reaching it, as well as from where you started?

Not to shock anyone but Project Humpty Dumpty is based upon a Type 964 -- albeit with a motor that is a very upgraded version of a Type 993 engine. This was done for a number of reasons -- in particular that Type 964 offered certain more complicated suspension challenges for carbon fiber.

If they made carbon fiber valve stem caps, do you think people would buy them?

First, my apologies to JPS -- I did not see your question. The current estimate is that the weight reduction will be in excess of 400 kg -- and this without eliminating the a/c, carpeting, stereo, other luxury features and will maintaining the steel doors, fenders and roof.

Jeff:

The scheduled completion has been somewhat delayed while we continue to evaluate proposals from several wiring firms, a process that will extend into next week. Initial proposals were far too expensive and, as such, the first set of vendors were told to either withdraw or re-quote and an additional group has been brought in. In any event, weight reduction from standard Porsche street car looms is expected to be in excess of 40%, i.e., in excess of 10 kg -- and if one designed a production version in conjunction with the design of a car, weight savings might be in excess of 60%.

Given this delay, other test components are being completed such as carbon fiber replacements for certain portions of the Tiptronic casing, even more advanced and lighter front and rear shock absorbers and, should there be possible non road car applications, the building of what might be the world's first carbon fiber strut.

In any event, the showing will be delayed until either early December or early January. Which do you think preferable? Also, to accommodate all (including many of the engineers who have worked on the project), the East Coast and West Coast unveilings will be on weekends.

Robert,
The end of the year is always a busy time, I'll make an effort to attend whenever the car is ready to be shown.

The oil tank looks great.

Cheers,

Thank you.

Would it be better to do it in the second or third week of January?
