Alternator Belt Smoking

Alternator Belt Smoking
I changed the three belts on my 993 today and the middle alternator belt is now smoking. After printing a copy of Robins DIY (Thanks Robin!) I found that there is a pulley upgrade to prevent premature wear of the belts. It took 2 weeks for the belts to arrive so I cant wait for the new pulley before reinstalling the belts (daily driver).
It seems as though the top pulley is squeezing the belt too tightly and the sides of the belt are melting. I tried adding shims but the problem persisted. Does anyone have any ideas as to what is causing the problem?
Thanks
Jim

Jim:
There is a cone shaped spacer between the inner and outer pulley on the alternator shaft. You have installed yours facing the wrong way. Remove the outer pulley and the spacer. Reinstall with the spacer facing in the other direction.

Hmm...might be the problem...

Exact same thing happened to me
Took me an hour to take everything apart to figure out the spacer was facing the wrong way.
By then though I had to get a new belt and clean the melted belt residue on the pulley.
Nice catch Hank
