Porsche System Tester 2 is a diagnostic tool used by the dealers. It reads/erases faults and downloads some information into the various processors.

PST-2 is a over priced 486 laptop. I think you can build one if you get the software and cable.

With all due respect Sir,.......I don't think so.

You need to use one for a while and see what it does,....

Further, Porsche will not sell the software.

Hi Greg:

FWIW, the PST-2 does not work on the '95 MY, OBDI cars. The PST is only for OBDII cars, 96 & later.

To scan and perform system tests on these cars, you must use the Bosch Hammer, (KTS-300) which is no longer manufactured or supported. Those were
$4K, in their time.

I have no idea why Porsche discontinued a tool that is mandatory for doing anything on these cars, but they did,.......

Any shop that didn't step up to buy one, is now out of luck for doing most things on the 89-95 Porsches.

Hi Steve, I'm quit familiar with the PST-2, I stated that it was an over priced 486 which it is.
Assuming you own one; next time do notice when it is booted that it opens in DOS then go into
the system to see that it is merely a 486 processor with a small hard drive. The cable that connects
to the car attaches to a common serial port in the rear. I'm not affiliated with that link, though they do
manufacture the cable and comparable software; though no cool Boxster pic on boot!

Steve - Greg is in the UK so his 95 993 could be the equivalent to the US 96 993. (I have a Euro MY94 993 which I THINK has the electronics/mechanicals as the US spec 1995 model.)

Greg will have to correct me on this.

Good point!

The scan port connector is the determining factor here, regardless of MY; OBD & OBDI use the round DIN connector that requires the Hammer, the squarish, ISO port used on OBDII cars will connect to either the Hammer (limited use) or the PST-2.

Dear David,
The first 1995 MY 993s imported into the USA are option M718 which means they are 1994 models converted to US spec but sold as 1995 models. Later the US received US spec 1995 models. The 1996 Model year 993s ROW and USA are the same apart from the changes required by the US government. The Bosch 5.2 systems were introduced on all 993s for MY 1996 along with varioram. You also have to be aware that some people talk year of manufacture or year of registration rather than model year.

whew! now I'm confused

My Euro-spec 993 is a 1994 model (non-varioram); I was always under the impression that this was an OBDI car and equivalent to a US-spec 1995 model (sans US required equipment). I was also thought that ROW models were usually 1 year ahead of the US (ie. last year ROW production for 993s was 1997 vs 1998 in the US). So are you saying that ROW had OBDII for 1997-97 whereas the US got OBDII for 1996-8??

Now I'm totally confused...time for a <img src="graemlins/drink.gif" border="0" alt="[cherrsagai]" />

It is. The 1994 MY 993 because the 1995 MY 993 inthe USA in the beginning. Then they received actual MY 1995 993s. They are differentiated by the option number M718. The USA did not receive the 993 when it first came out but everything was back to the same by MY 1996. ROW and USA got the Bosch 5.2 systems for MY 1996. Please do not mix up year of manufacture with model year. 1996 MY 993s were built from August 1st 1995 to July 31st 1996. OBII came out with MY 1996 993s all versions everywhere. Here in Europe we are not one model year ahead in specs or anything. Just a small glitch in model years 1994 and 1995. The USA received special versions of the 964 series until the first of the 993s arrived.

I'm a mechanic for a small independent Porsche shop. Porsche U.K will not sell the PST2 to anyone apart from main dealers. We would like to get one so we can offer Boxter and 996 owners a alternative to main dealer service and prices! The 996 and boxter and some sytems in the late 993 can only be accessed by a PST2. So as you can't do anything beside change the oil and brakes the dealers have a monopoly on these cars.
If I could buy one of these used does anyone know if Porsche would support it, or will they only support it if you buy it from them.

Any help would be fantastic
