Problem with reverse gear
Hi to all,
I finally bought a '95 Porsche 993 Carrera 2.
Once I have pictures I will post them here...
In the meantime I wanted to ask about reverse gear.
The gearbox works very well in all 6 forward gear, but it requires very big effort to shift into reverse.
I have driven multiple 993, but my car is very difficult to shift into reverse.
It doesn't grind or anything, and the clutch is new, but to overcome the force of the spring it is very hard.
What could be the problem?
I did a search, but couldn't find something specific to my problem.
Thanks !

I doubt that there are any issues with your gearbox. The reverse spring on these gearboxes has always been pretty still, but it could need to be replaced if for some reason it failed internally and is not working correctly. (doubtful)
You may want to check your shifter bushings though to make sure that they are not badly worn. Especially the bushing that guides the shifter rod. If it is missing or badly worn it MAY be the culprit.
You can go to a softer block out spring, but this would be quite expensive unless you already have the gearbox out for some other reason.
Good luck and congrats.

It is supposed to have a noticeably different amount of force applied to go into the reverse gate. This is to prevent inadvertently going into reverse.
When you say you are applying big force, what is your point of comparison? Does it feel like you are forcing it? Or are you simply feeling the strong spring pressure that must be overcome?
Give us some more info, and we can help you better.
Good luck

As I try to move the gear lever to reverse it feels like you are pushing the lever against something solid. As you push harder eventually it overcomes the resistance and it slides smoothly into reverse. The force is sometimes so much that the transmission tunnel slightly moves due to the excessive force. Gears 1-6 work very nice and smooth. Could something need alignment ?
