Default how to reduce wind noise

Anybody else notice a lot of wind noise at above 80 mph with the windows rolled up?

I thought that it was the door seals, so I replace them. It helped reduce the noise a bit, but it's still there. Perhaps the window seals???? Any ideas?

Jeff,

I wonder if you're hearing the results of the latest, 1965 aerodynamics technology, with which our cars are built? I understand the 996s have us badly beat in the wind-noise department.

Your mufflers are simply too quiet, if the wind noise is bothering you.

Smooth over the rain gutters and remount all the glass flush...like the previous post, it's 1965 technology! Ah, heck, it's CHARM!

I did notice the Ecellence article about the 959 and Porsche did smooth out that rain gutter/seam. It looks good but I think impossible to do after the fact.

Steve, I'm impressed. Who ever said you can't teach an old dog new tricks...

Ditto. I'd also suggest you downshift.

Seriously, it may be years spent too close to the band, but wind noise in my coupe has not been a problem.

Jeff,

Did you replace the door seals AND the seals that surround the side window frames LH and RH and push in against the body when the doors are closed?

I did the door seals (the ones that are glued into the channel around the body door opening) and just ordered the ones that go into the side window (black anodized) frames.

Part numbers for a 1996 are: 993-542-095-00 LH and 993-542-096-00 RH.
1997 part numbers are different.

These seals, if worn or taken a "set" would make a big wind noise difference.

To all you lunatics ( aka viperbob ), demi lunatics ( dan/bruce ) and lunatics in training ( steve ).. I have a set of cat bypass pipes that I'm going to put on in a few weeks. This will certainly make the car a bit louder.

But the wind noise is very annoying, kind of like the windshield creaking. Interesting, the creaking doesn't bother me at all, but wind noise just sets me off.

Mike, I just replaced the door seal, NOT the window seal. Let me know what kind of difference changing the window seals make. If you could take a few pics along the way, that'd be great too.

As I understand it, all RUFs have the rain gutters sliced off for aerodynamic aid. As a cheaper alternative, they also offer a 'filler' that you can simply insert. Check it out here: RUF Aero Aid

I wonder how they slice off the rain gutters. Do they do it when they get the body in white from Porsche so they can get to the inside. I think the rain gutter is a convienient way to make a seam between the roof panel and the other sheet metal parts of the door frame.

Anybody dig into the guts of the sheet metal. If it is a seam, it seems like it would be a huge job to cut them off, reinforce the roof in some other fashion and then smooth it all out. Interesting that RUF goes to the effort to do that. Is it for aerodynamics or noise?

Dang, I'm full of questions today!

Jeff - my guess is you are hearing the windshield seal let air by a bit. My 993TT is quiet at speed, but my other 911s have had wind noise problems in the past. In all cases it was greatly improved with a new windshield seal.

I knew a guy that "ground-off" the gutters for his 911 race car. Yes, the rain gutter is the seam that holds the roof to the sides. So he would grind off a couple of inches, then weld, then a few more, etc. Big, miserable job for minimal benefit. On my RSR, I used to use some body-colored duct tape, and just tape over the gutters on the a-piller. Did it make me faster? Who knows.

The noise is likely the rubber door seals for the window frame. It manifests itself as almost a whistling noise at high speeds. You can isolate and test for this fairly easily.

At any home hardware store you can find a roll of black foam door weather stripping. Purchase one that is fairly thin (I'd say 1/4") and apply to the top of the window frame.

Drive on the highway and see if it helps. If you don't mind the look, you could just leave it in.

This was how I isolated the problem to my door seals which likely had dried up a bit over time.

Thanks,
Peter

Speaking of wind noise around the door, I have an actual gap between the body and the window frame around the triangle area on the left door:

For comparison, a shot of the right door where the seal is perfectly flush:

The seals on both doors "feel" the same to the touch so I doubt that one is newer than the other. Any suggestions? Should I replace the seal or is there some alignment that I can do to the window frame?

This first surfaced about 30K miles ago. A competent body shop told me it was the window frame needing alignment. I wonder if closing the door by pushing on the top of the window frame, rather than the door handle, causes this. The seals look and feel fine.
