Just finished this job, and would like to share what I discovered:
My OBC backlight was off, so following Tore Bergvill's great directions,
http://www.bergvillfx.com/obcrepair.html
I tackled the job today. I had ordered two bulbs from SuperBright LEDS as I was unsure of the brightness relative to the stock .9W bulb.
I found that the B8.4d-W was better, as the brighter B8D-WHP was too bright even in full daylight. The B8.4D-W is still brighter than stock, should be very legible with sunglasses on.
You can indeed get the tach out without removing the steering wheel, but it requires taking out the speedo first so you can push from behind, and a lot of cursing helps.
Be aware that LEDs are polarized - if the bulb doesn't light when first inserted, turn it around to reverse to polarity. Easy to test before you push it back into the dash.
