Post 996 GT3 Wiring Harness Failure

Apparently, the 1995 993 is not the only 911 which can suffer from a faulty wiring harness.

The November 2001 issue of 911 & PORSCHE WORLD contains a "Running Report" by an owner of a 2000 996 GT3. While exercising his car a Silverstone, he suddenly became aware that the car's engine was no longer running. When he stopped the car, he realized that the car was on fire. The fire was caused by "a wire touching the exhaust and burning out the main fuel feed control loom." The wiring loom was replaced under warranty. (The service, which included a tune-up, took two weeks.)

That sounds a little different than the 993 harness problem. The 993's harness failure was a contribution to the faulty insolation material used on the wire, which will crack and become brittle overtime and cause the short. Not from touching the exhaust.

Sounds like the 996 GT3 harness problem was a placement design problem, or an mechanic error.
