There is a groove along the inside of the outer frame, into which the (non-bendy) reinforcement bar fits. Not connected with the grill at all.

Just about to do this myself, does it matter which order u install the grill and reinforcing bar? Is installing first easier? I have the whole thing apart right now so wanted to check.

I put the split grills into the outer-frame first, decided after a few weeks that it was too floppy, and then put the bar in.

In hindsight it is probably easier/better to put the bar in first, clamp it up tightly and let it set for a few days, so the frame is 'fixed' in exactly the correct shape.

Then fix the split grill x3 sections in.

That way, the grill-fixing-in is working with the correct shape to start with.

If you see what I mean.

Here's one I made earlier.... so as you can see, it ends-up in the correct shape even if you do it the 'wrong' way round.

 

Many thanks OC! When you say 'clamp' do you mean with some woodworking clamps? Does this need to be done with the spolier installed on the car? Sorry for the dumb questions.

 

Before you put the new spoiler and grills together (and so still off the car), buy some clips like this, and a decent silicone/glue/sealant.

Dry-fit the bar - you will see it fits snugly, so you don't need much 'glue'.

So put the 'glue' + bar in the slot, get it 'correct', clean off any excess, then protecting the paintwork with say some cloth or a towel, put all of the clips along the join so that nothing moves. Leave it for at least 24 hours.

Ordered the metal bar. Will remove the spoiler again and get the bar in place. Can't understand why they don't tell you about the bar when buying the change over kit.

 

as suggested I bought the whole set(new spoiler frame too)
just to avoid the pain or breaking parts(after 20 years the gummy things are dead).
anyway is the best looking mod after the big ovals!

 

Good luck with the project. Don't do like me and forget to install the structural reinforcement bar. The frame and grill kit I bought didn't include it or mention that I would need it. As a result I got everything installed and now will take it apart to install the bar.
