Default Rough Shifting When Cold - Solved

Thought I would pass this on:

I have read a few times of cars having rough or sticky shifting when cold. Mine has been doing the same. I was going to replace the bushing in the shifter but found that I needed more parts to fully address the shifting mechanism.

But I noticed that there was some gummy dirt on the shift pipe (27). Before putting it back together, I cleaned the pipe with a rag and WD40. Though still sloppy, it shifts much smoother, especially when cold. The gummy grease was causing friction when cold. This is a quick and cheap fix to smooth out the shifts.

I will be replacing the 4 "Inserts" (4) and the nylon cups in the guide tube ends They have a 928 part number 928-116-145-03 . More info can be found here https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...-bushings.html

Thanks for the tip. Sure hope if you have things this disassembled you are installing a golden rod. One of the best mods for these cars.

I am wanting to see how it should shift as designed. Then will look at the golden rod.

I wonder if the grease and related shift linkage parts served originally as a fluid damper to make shifting feel smoother and tamp down any perceptions of the synchros locking in during shifting?
When my 993 was a lot younger the shifting was very smooth with fluid like dampening when shifting. After having the tranny rebuilt it did not return to this state, I can now feel the subtle click of the synchros engaging from first to second gear. Maybe the grease is there for a reason, it just needs to be replaced with some synthetic variant that stays soft when cold. Could some of what drivers call notchiness simply be the result of this grease no longer providing dampening?

Others thoughts?

Just a thought!

Understand that you want it to act as originally configured, but the original design was to seperate or reduce, transmission vibrations from shifter. That design alone, creates sloppiness and indirect shift feel. The GL does not transmit any excessive vibration. What it does do, is eliminate vagueness and any play/indirectness from shifting. Just do it!

Went and uploaded the vid I made when I was making my own GL. This'll show ya how bad the original design is.

As far as the grease being there intentionally, I would expect the shifting to be terrible since the 4 inserts on mine appear to be well worn. If they were in good shape the shifting would have been much worse I think.

Well that is not due to age.

I have a spare ultra low mileage unit that looks like it came off the assembly line yesterday and that movement is normal for the unit. Those bolts are shouldered and prevent tightening it up.

Yeah, the bolts won't tighten any more and the slop is to "disconnect" any vibration from the driver, through the shifter. That design alone is what leads to vague shift feel and only worsens with the rubber hardening with age. My vid was to show those that may not realize, why their shifter feels so sloppy.
