Post Third brake light

There are two types of middle brake lights on the 993's. There is one that is integrated into the trailing edge of the roof, and one that is mounted on a bar that is just under the rear window. Does anyone know why there are two types? Which cars did which brake light come on? Are there any ways to switch them? I like the cleaner look of the integrated one into the roof. Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Dan

I believe the light on the bar was standard on the 95 (like mine) but became an option in later years. Matter of preference, I like it, looks like a discrete spoiler...

The "basket handle" is standard on MY95.

There are kits to convert to the newer, integrated style.

The reason I heard was that the newer style
was not approved in time for the coupe, so they
just used the standard design from the cab, the
"basket handle".

Yes, it was standard on MY95, however, only partly through the model year. Late model 95s came without it and had the other style above the rear glass, which was standard from then on.

Dan, there are actually two different style replacement kits available for the high mount third brake light for the rear glass of the early MY95 993's. One's an after market sport version and the other is an OEM style unit. Refer to the following links:

The basket handle might be aerodynamically superior to the one on the roof.

I have also been told by the former Vasek Pollack people (now Pacific Porsche) that only the first 40% or so of the 993s imported have the "basket handle" or "towel bar" which is one way to quickly date a bretheren on the road. Can anybody corraborate this purported factoid?

How does all this apply to my '97 Targa WITH the basket handle...I'd imagine it has something to do with the fact that the Targa is based from the Cab body.

I understand that the window brake light is for
coupes and the basket handle brake light is for
cabrio as there is no window light possible.
So ist is in Germany/Europe.
