http://p-car.com/diy/key/

this describes that there is a catch in the key housing. Can you find a spot to relieve the catch with a tool and let the blade fall out?

Thanks guys. That helped. I knew there was a catch in there, but it wasn't obvious how to diffuse the bomb

For good karma, here's the illustrated guide to key shank removal

Step 1: using a tiny screwdriver or blade, pry the spring stopper up (perpendicular) from the key face

Step 2: allow the spring block to slide out

Step 3: the shank is now free to slide out from the key head

Hope this helps someone else in the future

Or save yourself 5 minutes and put the blade in a vice and pop the head off with a pair of long nose pliers underneath, takes 7 seconds

Be very careful not to loose the tiny spring, that is not easy to find after 'flying away' ...

No need to worry about the little spring! There is a new one in the new key head!
