How long do shocks typically last?

Mine started showing wear signs just before 20k miles and were really bad at 25k miles. Another Rennlister friend had his gone right after 10k miles but he had a lot of track miles on his.

JPS:
The OEM German Monroes are not very long-lived. As Viken & Bob indicated, 40K is MAX.
IMHO, they are are shot by 20K. The difference is astounding when the stock suspension system is replaced by something good *, and one finally realizes the true capabilities of these cars.
* I like PSS-9's for street cars; Bilstein HD'S with H&R Springs are fine, too.

E.J;.....You are a VERY funny fellow,....
Randy: PSS-9's are still too new to know how long they last,.....typically Bilsteins are still good at 70K miles if history is any indication.
B-Line: Its a "feel" thing. From experience, I can tell when they are done,.....the old bounce tests are not accurate. I'll drive the car around on some varying surfaces and observe the car's reaction and behavior on bumps.
Todd: Either one is OK, although I am very partial to the H&R springs with Bilstein HD's. Its a nice combo that still has good ride quality and offers a worthwhile improvement in handling.

Trust me, they're shot.
I've ridden in a lot of 993s as an instructor, and almost always, before we get to the pit out, I'm saying to myself, "Shocks need to be replaced". Like Steve said, it's a feel thing.
I replaced mine with ROW M030 at 10k because I couldn't stand it any longer. The 030's lasted until 20k. Some people aren't as sensitive to it, and can tolerate it a lot longer. Life's short: get new shocks.

By this I should replace mine (76K on car), but to me they feel fine. No bouncy ride, feels stiff over bumps, good handling to me, no leaks. These were Boge M030 shocks as I remember. Numbers on the housings matched the ones in the parts book.
The stock US shocks felt worn out before I hit 10K miles. Also Boge as I remember.
Now, the Audi A4 at 72K is another story; Sport suspension feels worn out. Suspension travels too much over bumps.

Can someone tell me what stock shocks look like ? Color, serial # or something ? I ask becasue my car has 47K miles and feels great, and I doubt very very much the PO replaced them, ever.. I did sebring with them and the instructor commented on the nice bump absorbing ride.
All thsi talk of shocks lasting so little surprise me, maybe I do have replacements after all ? Or my butt is too padded !

Viken and Steve or .....
Would one/both of you give me a little help on this topic?
My 97 C2 has the original shocks. The only thing I know about them is that they're OEM and green color. 26,000 miles on the car. I plan on keeping the car forever and was thinking about changing the shocks over the winter downtime.
No interest in lowering the car.
1) Change the shocks?
2) What to use as a replacement for the OEM? Bilstein from Gert?
Thanks, guys.

Also, the stock M030 shocks look like these:
The standard shocks look the same but should be green.
If you feel that your shocks are still good at 47k miles, leave them alone.
