I've mounted the GoPro on the DAS bolt in bar before...but it is pretty far back considering how wide the camera is...I don't really get a sense for the track. Any other spots people have come up with to still show steering input and all that?
I mount my cell phone (w/ Harry's lap timer) to the inside of the windshield with a Ram X-Grip mount and have been very happy with it... easy to use and secure. Ram makes many other types of mounts and they have one specifically for a GoPro, see below.
I also like varying the position for each run and combining everything into one take. Just keep the best audio track and cut the different video takes into one as if you had different cameras.
If the problem is the GoPro lens is too wide of an angle, then you should see if there is a longer lens that you can mount to make the angle less wide. You retain your roll bar mounting point, reduce your focal length and still get to see your steering action.
Go through your GoPro instructions. I am just about sure there's different settings you can use. You can avoid the washed out effect of the track while filming from inside. Should be able to narrow frame also. I know there's way to many adjustments and I've only tried like 2 of them.
