problems with 993 transmission?

Burning Brakes
I recall a mechanic saying the 993 has a smaller (main gear? Nose gear? Forgot) versus the 964, and not optimal for racing. He said the first mod he recommended is fixing that weak link, and the synchros.

If they don't deal with race cars they may not even know it is an option. Or maybe they figured your street car didn't need it. 2nd and 3rd are really the gears I think it most benefits. But we are talking about $1500 more expensive than the stock parts, so around $2000 for just 2 and 3. It's a hard sell if someone isn't tracking heavily and used to rebuilding a gearbox every 2-3 years.

Need more details. But on the surface this makes no sense.

It was a few years ago. I believe he said it was in conjunction with change to a 6 speed.
Possible a main bearing in the nose section? He said the stock transmission would have dark, nasty fluid after 1 race, prior to modifications.
What is made smaller comparing the 964 to the 993?

Nothing is smaller. The casting for the tailcone was made an inch or so longer to fit another gear into it.
