Question Wheel Refinishing

I an getting ready to refinish my Targa wheels. I was wondering if anyone has an opinion on painting vs. powder coating the wheels. I plan on having the tires dismounted and remove the bolts prior to refinishing.
Thanks for your input.

Unless they are forged wheels, it is not recommended to powder coat them. The heat could damage the casting. I'd have them sprayed.

Painting. Always. Powder coating does give you a stronger bond and is harder to chip, but the potential downside is that it if the heat is too high it will compromise the structural integrity of the wheel. Based on that I am not comfortable running powder coated wheels.

Default This is who I use...

You send them your wheel(s). They straighten them if needed, strip them and repaint them to new condition. You pay the freight to ship them down...they send them back to you freight pre-paid. The wheels literally look brand new, inside the barrels and of course the interior. Turn around is 24 hours or thereabouts...what a great deal.

I have send them multiple sets over the years, to THIS SPECIFIC LOCATION. I have a pal with a car dealership, he sends his Porsche wheels here as well. We know about Al Reed....we know about the guy in Oroville....they are great, but the turn around is not there.

I hope these guys are still in business...they are the best!

Martin,

What if there is a curb gash that has taken a bit of metal with it? Will they correct it? I can get a pic later if needed.

Did they have a choice of finishes or do you just say Porsche standard?

Looks they are a franchise and there is a Dallas location. Anybody in Dallas used the local outfit?

I think they just match the finish and color of the wheels.

You should consider getting all new hardware. I assume there is also a sealant, that too. There seems to be mixed schools in terms of masking off lug seat or not. Paint might make it slippery.

And mask off the area for the contact between the two pieces, and where the bolts for them go.

I need to refinish that one but it's magnesium, it's hard to find someone that works on them.

I used their Miami location a few times and they had to redo the wheels two times in both instances and I still wasn't happy. I'm sure each location has differing levels of skills though. My preferred choice and one that I've used quite a few times is Wheel Enhancements, they don't **** around!

I feel your pain. I had my MY02s refinished twice here in Dallas and they were mediocre at best. Actually the first time 3 of them were perfect but the fourth one was a different shade The second time they did them ALL the wrong shade and added imperfections. Do wheel enhancements paint or powder?

Wheels America is in Texas as well and does a fine job. Had them do my wheels they look great. But no one has the fine particle paint like the factory wheels. Long story short, do all four wheels at a time.

They have competitors too, but cost more and transaction is not as smooth from my experience.
