This site has some rather interesting info on the issue of aftermarket HID conversions:

Hi Eric
The Stern Lighting piece you linked seems to be a lone voice from a commercial seller of competing products written years ago.
FWIW, I've not heard of anyone on this Board who has converted to HID experiencing any of the myriad of problems predicted by Stern.
I see the benefits of my HID conversion every time I drive at night.
Hope you're not spending Boxing Day at the computer

I agree with Dan. My $400 HID H1 conversion hasn't exploded nor resulted in a nuclear meltdown yet. It was the best upgrade. I also converted a 740 with the same kit and no problems. The bulbs, on the other hand, are mainly a waste of money, unless of course you drive a tricked out Integra GSRRRR.

I've already got my H1 Phillips kit sitting here in a box waiting to go in, I wasn't going to let that site convince me not to!

I've already seen how good it is on Steve and John W's car over here - miles better than the extremely poor halogens that came with the 993.

Dan, I'm afraid that sadly enough I am sitting in front of the computer on Boxing Day. Well, beats sitting with the relatives..

Happy Christmas all!!

Actually, if you read the article carefully, they slam only the cheesy "blue-look" bulbs and those other bulbs that claim miracles. The article legitimizes REAL HIDs as well as REAL HID Retrofits that come complete as units. I think the article does a good job at reminding people that you get what you pay for. And if those HIDs cost you a bunch, it's probably because they're better than the poseurs. C'mon, we're all driving variants of the same high-priced breed. Don't we all believe that our cars inherently are designed/manufactured to a higher standard which then justifies, in our minds, what we pay for them and all the requisit mods? I say the article only confirms our common sense about what's "good" versus what's "trendy." I guess I'm keeping my standard bulbs....that is until someone drops a good set of HIDs in my lap --like I said, I guess I'm keeping my bulbs Enjoy, for those that already have them !!!

Just installed a Philips HID kit yesterday for about the equivalent of US$ 500 (installation included). It took the garage 2 guys about 30 minutes to do it. They had limited experience with Porsches, but did a lot of other cars. I asked them to also open up the headlamps to clean the insides for me (for free). That took another 20 minutes.

The store initially tried to sell me other brands for even cheaper prices, but I still decided on Philips. I checked Philips website, and it had mentioned Porsche as one of the upgradeable cars.

The difference with the original halogen's is "day" and "night". I felt that I couldn't see well enough at night before to drive over 130 km/hr with the old Halogens.

Also, I believe there are enough Philips HID's installed in 993's to make a pretty safe bet.

As for highbeams, they still work, but the HID's pretty much overwhelms them.

As long as I don't have problems with these Philips HID's , I would highly recommend them to guys near or over 40. When you get older, you definitely need more light!!

Hello all,

I'm also about to install the Philips D2S kit on my 993. I got the kit from Steve Weiner (Portland, OR) and volunteered my ride as one of his U.S. testers. I will take images before and after the conversion, and updated everyone on overall status.

Happy Holidays,
Linh
