Default A NEW TOY for 993 NA and Turbo guys =)

Well guys, I have found a little bit of a gold mine for us 993 NA guys. I have a little story so bare with me:

I bought a Ported 993 throttle body from Tom_W (I think thats his name) and recieved. it. The bore was VERY poorly done, all they did was hone out the Front part of the throttle body and thats it. Their was NEVER any difference that was noticable, so for $250 SAVE your MONEY. So, what I did was I sent this throttle body out to my friend who Hones, Knife edge's and polishes Throttle Bodies. He informed me that the job, previously did, pretty much did nothing. So What he did was port out the "lip" of the throttle body a bit bigger AND took the "STEP" out, right by the throttle plate on both sides of the throttle body. It was then that the Stock Throttle Plate was too Small, because he shaved off so many millimeters off the step to make it perfectly equal to the front piece of the throttle body. He then Designed an aluminum throttle plate bigger for the new specs. When iI got it back..it was MIRRORED ( you could litterally see your reflection) and VERY smooth like BUTTER.

I just recieved it on Thursday, and installed it today. I took Pics of the differences. The Stock Throttle..not sure what it was But I measured 63.5mm Total diameter. The NEW Throttle Plate is 74.5mm (almost 3"). Which was a BIG difference. About 10mm.

Just drove it this morning. WOW, I can honestly see a day and night difference. The car accelerates off the line VERY EASILY and right when you "blimp" the throttle the Rpm's jump so quickly. The car use to be so restricted around 4000-5000 rpm struggling up to the higher rpm, but this has solved most the problem, the car pulls consistently past 6500 rpm., and it pulls so much better. Cant Wait to put 100 Octane and see what it does.

I included some pictures, of the differences. ENJOY! MAybe I can help my friend out and get a GB going up.

Interesting, thanks for the info...I was under the impression that a bored out throttle body on an otherwise stock 993 motor was a waste of time and money

And will a car pass smog (I didn't think so, but please, please, please....)? or at least take minimal time and effort to install/remove?

how much would it cost to duplicate btw?

Hey Dave, DEFIENTLY not a waste or time or money. The DIY took about 1 hour, not hard at all, even took the time to clean the ISV.

Smog..well..It takes an hour to take out..but WELL WORTH it. If not theirs OTHER ways to pass Smog that can be done. So I'm not really that much worried.

Okay, the total cost so far..was...

-Bought another TB-$200
-Send it out UPS second Day Air-$20
-My friend charges $150-$200
-Making a new Throttle Plate..Not Sure Ill as.

I know TOTAL cost was Under $350-400 which is ALL not bad at all.

I See you live in LA, If you need a ride or want to drive the car with it. All CA guys are more than welcome to drive my car and see the difference

Chris -

thanks for the info and the offer for a ride. while you won't know how much power gain there is until you dyno, it seems that the throttle response is where the gains are mostly coming from...and in any case it sounds like a pretty good bang-for-buck. I look forward to any additional info you post.

I'm currently away from LA but when I get back into town I may have to take you up on your offer!

Ahhh, only one glitch for the Turbo guys as we do not have the same intake system as the NA cars. Ours is HUGE with the throttle body being a single piece with the two cross chambers for the intake system. Here is our throttle body:

And it is a pain to take off......

Hey Graham, I will be doing it this week to keep people updated..Hopefully this can be something ALL of us (993 NA guys) to help for the search of power

chris

Update: So far I've havent had a problem with HIGH idle or anything like that. It's idling at about 800-900 RPM The car seems fine and drives fine, Just gotta get used to the car taking off faster..because its quicker hahha..take care
