Default 993 stolen in Calgary…"Almost"

Dear listers,

With all the chatter about stolen Porsche 993 models, let me chime in with a very recent incident. I t really points to this theft problem.

When I had some recent issues with my "Immobilizer" (which was not the case), I had my DME replaced with my friends's DME, another 1997 model 993. His 993 was in a body shop for some minor issue.

While his 993 was without the DME in the (unnamed) body shop, thieves broke into the building and tried to steal this "Special wishes, yellow 993"… but there was no DME in the 993, so it would not start!

These 993 model Porsches don't seem to be safe anywhere, as noted here, of course the keys to his 993 were in the car, after all it may have to be moves at some time.

His 993 was "saved" purely by good fortune, as his DME was in my 993 to troubleshoot my problem… it turned to it was something else.

Cheers to you all and a "happy thanksgiving" to you all from up here in Canada,

Bert

Would it be a wise idea to remove the DME relay for winter storage? I'm keeping my car at a rental garage this winter while an old 912 awaits being brought back to life at my house

You'd have to be a pretty dumb thief not to carry a $20 relay just in case.

Yeesh. I routinely take the dme out of mine, but stopped b/c I thought I was being a wierdo. I think I might start again.

It would be funny to see them try to drive away with my near slicks and todays weather at -21*C and snowing...

I would consider that, I do have a kill switch in my car and remove the key if parked for long periods of time...

Security has to be custom, meaning it is something you yourself devised and changed in your own vehicle. They can't read about circumventing that one in any manual.

Its also a good idea to reprogram the remotes when buying a car. It kicks out other remotes that may have been programmed into the system previously.

I still like the idea of a bait vehicle. Then I get to play sniper.
