Hello all...considering replacing OEM 4-spoke with Momo (Mod 7 or Tuner). Somewhat concerned about airbag removal, but I'm thinking in a worst-case scenario, that's what the belts are for.
Go ahead and replace that 4-spoker...with a 996 3 spoker. Best of all worlds (smaller diameter, thicker wheel and safety of the airbag). When the upside far exceeds the downside, it makes decisions like this really easy.

Any thoughts?

Actually the belts are to keep you from being ejected and to keep you in place so when the airbag deploys it doesn't break your neck. I've investigated 1000's of collisions over the last 15+ years. DO NOT delete your airbag if you don't have a full cage, harness, hans protection system. When used properly, they are phenomenal in the lives they've saved.
Hell, I almost got done in moving parts around the shop yesterday. Knee and hip are reminders today. This week? Wheel bearings/brakes + rotors on a W4500 cab forward with 19.5" wheels that weigh about as much as a 993.
I think we're exposed to more risks in day-to-day, than when driving a 911. Of any vintage.
I never thought much about air bags until last summer (2013). My wife is Type I diabetic and she was driving my 08 GTI when her blood sugar crashed. I was in the passenger seat and could not talk her into pulling over. Finally got her to take an exit off the interstate but she never lifted off the accelerator. She started drifting back toward the highway after we were already committed to the exit ramp. I pulled the hand brake and grabbed the steering wheel to keep us on the pavement instead of a tree covered embankment. Ended up sliding sideways, into the back a SUV stopped at a traffic light at the top of exit ramp at about 30 mph. Impacted on the drivers side with multiple air bags deploying. She ended with 8 broken ribs but I would hate to think about how bad it would have been without an air bag. Much more important to me now to have them.
Boy, I feel sorry for all those early 911 drivers out there, particularly those pre-'74 long hood car drivers.
No airbags, no crash bumpers.
Nothing but fun living oh so dangerously.
Life has risks take them as you see them IMHO, have the steering wheel of your desires and buckle up.
I'll finish it up by asking who has owned a short wheelbase 911/912 with OE seatbelts. Even when I got my '68 in '80, it was well known to relocate those lap belt mounts. Which I believe I did the weekend after I got mine, and was happily in compliance when I showed up at my first PCA autocross in the tech line.
I actually found an airbag to have caused a death once. The driver was covered with a white colored spatttering of crap. An elderly lady with this stuff all over her hair, face, dress and interior compartment. While driving she looking down, veered right and center punched the 5' ft diameter tree adjacent the the creek embankment. Both front airbags deployed and the passenger side killed a huge wedding cake that was on passenger seat. She was really upset about the airbag "killing the cake". Didn't even bat an eye that she was still standing there complaining about it. Shoulda snapped some pics.
