Question Salvage/ rebuilt title - help need info

I have found a 95 coupe 34,000 miles that was a salvage/rebuilt title because of damage to the right front. All damage has been repaired and certified by local Porsche dealer. The car comes with a 2 year warranty - price $34,500.00 from the second owner who purchased the salvage title.

Is the car worth this $?

What are the issues with a salvage title??

Thanks,

Blizzard

Blizzard, is the paperwork outlining the repair work done to the car's damage available? If not, I'd say move on, because there are a lot of fish in the sea. If it is available, then you can at least look at it to see what the extent of the damage was without spending too much time on this.

In the end, I'd probably say pass on this unless 1)the paperwork is available and the repairs were not too extensive and was done by a reputable shop AND 2)you have the car examined by a mechanic and body shop AND 3)you get the car for a great price (probably at least 20-25% less than a comparable car with a clean title) AND 4)you feel comfortable (psychologically) driving a car with that history at speed (if you take it to the track).

Blizzard, the '95 cars with clean titles that I saw are at or around that price nowadays. So, why get a salvage title car when you can get one with a clean title for the same price.
Hope this helps

Kevin has great points.

I gotta say that $34.5K is a small price to pay for warranteed 993 ownership. If the car makes you happy, then move forward with it.

Blizzard,

$34.5 is way too high for a salvage title, IMO. There are other 95s in, or slightly above, that price range so why go "salvage." With salvage, you have unknown repair history (despite what any piece of paper says), unknown body integrity (body shops can be skilled at spit-shining serious damage), and atrocious resale potential. And remember, despite what the dealer says, anything declared "salvage" by the insurance co. means that repair costs outweighed buyout costs... Translation: the car got nailed good!!!
I'd counter with a reallllly low number if you feel confident about the car (still, get a good mechanical/body PPI from someone you trust), or better yet, look elsewhere. This is a really good time to find a good, bargain 993. Good luck!

There was an ad placed in the classifieds here 5 days ago for a '95 with 50+k for 35,500 for a comparison.

Thanks everyone,

I greatly appreciate your feedback. I think I will stay away from this car.

I saw a 96 C4S with salvage title in Kansas for the low 30's shop said it was perfect...Wanted 39K but sounded like he would take $30-$33 for the car when I approached him about a 96 cab with 63K miles that I bought for $30,000. Non salvage. I think $23-$26K tops

Always remember to check with your insurance agent if contemplating the purchase of a salvaged-title car. The price you pay for the car and the amount the insurance company will pay for theft/total loss will probably be VERY different. Translated: something happens and you need to file a claim, you could lose big time!

Insurance aside, I agree with the above-posted thoughts - find a nice, clean (inside, outside, title) car. You'll sleep better! :-)
