Default Anyone for Thule roof racks group buy? (Europe)

After a bit of investigation, it seems that the proper Thule roof rack components for a 993/964 are:

2 x 761 (120cm bars ~£22.50 per 2 pack)
2 x 951 (standard feet for rain gutter equipped cars ~£26.96 per 4 pack)
2 x 952 (8cm taller versions of 951s ~£53.96 per 4 pack, to compensate for falling roofline of 993)

Shops tend to sell the feet as 4 packs only, which means that you need to pay £103.42 and get 8 feet!

BUT, if two Rennlisters get together and split the 951 and 952 packs, that brings the price down to £62.96 each - ~40% OFF!

Maybe if someone already has a set of 951s in very good condition and wants to get the proper fittings, we could buy one set of 952s and work something out?

(The shipping costs between US and Europe probably makes this deal unattractive to US residents)

Hi Graham,

Sure you don't want a tow hook to go with that!

Only joking!

Cheers,

David

How are you going to protect the paint work on the runners if you use this?

I haven't seen how soft the plastic lining is. Maybe I will have to add a thin layer of soft plastic.

You'll need to be careful as if you are using two bars they can slip and if you go too tight then you damage the paint...

There was an article in 911 World that had some guy driving to Portugal (I think) using a luggage box thing on a couple of bars.

If it is just two of you then why not just use loose luggage and travel light. You would be amazed how much you can squeeze into one of these cars.

Cheers,

David

Graham,

I have the Thule setup and have shlepped wheels and tires to the track. First, I bought and applied selfstick felt to the "feet" to protect the paint in the rain gutters. Second, I lay the two rear wheels/tires horizontally, next to each other, face down on the two crossbars, which are about 12 inches apart. I have also wrapped the bars with the felt where the face of the wheel rims lay. Third, I use motorcycle tie-down straps to secure the wheels to the bars. Fourth, I bag the two front wheels/tires and stand them up next to each other on the passenger seat, after completely covering the seat with a heavy guage plastic tarp. Fifth, I wedge heavy terry toweling between the inside of the passenger door and the wheels, and between the tires and the dash.

It is pretty time consuming to load and unload, as care for the car and the wheels is paramount. But it can be done.

Yes. See page 86 of the August 2003 issue of 911&PW. The picture there shows a 911 with 951s fitted all round and it is very obviously at an angle. It looks odd to me and can't be good for the aerodynamics when a box is loaded. That's why 952s are needed for the rear bar

Thanks for the suggestion - sounds good.
