I just bought a new battery, and upon removing the old one I found about 2 tablespoons of white powder in the battery compartment. Is this dried acid? What is the best solution to use to wash it off? Anyone encounter this?

Just another reason to get a sealed battery.
I had a worse thing happen in my car, the battery acid etched portions of the trunk pan. <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" />

You can check out my battery setup first hand tomorrow.
Also, i noticed at the local kragen auto parts, they had an exide orbital select on the shelf, if you are interested. I know, you've been through a bit of a saga with batteries..

Had the problem with my 944 when battery acid leaked and etched the metal. I cleaned the area with baking soda and then sprayed a rust proofing paint. Lastly, I purchased a battery pad that absorbs any future acid fumes that may escape. Been about fours years and no more problems. When I replaced my battery on the 993, used another battery pad and made sure vent tube was properly in place.

Well today I put some baking soda on the powder and dripped some water on it and it fizzed
Looks like acid! So I pored Whole container of baking soda on the whole trunk area and washed it real good. Installed the new Interstate battery with a vent that is in the wrong location, (anyone know how to adapt this?) And the battery would not start the car! I charged it for a while and it was still dead! I ent up putting the old battery back into the car.
