Default Halon 1211 fire extinguisher

Just wondering if the 2.5 Pound is still the Preferred Extinguisher for our cars?

If so, Can the Older Units still be Serviced?
Thanks Tom

I'd rather use Halon than dry chemical-that white powder is murder to clean up-maybe better to let the car burn, than clean it up?

Contact your local fire extinguisher service on the question of updating.

Just thought I would mention that "Halon" was banned in 1994 as it was responsible for ozone depletion in the atmosphere and also toxic to humans when used in confined spaces (computer rooms). The replacement is called Halotron. As such, a halon extinguisher cannot be refilled with Halotron since the contents of the extinguisher would not match what's on the label.

If you mean Halon or Halon extinguishers aren't available, not true, plenty of reclaimed Halon 1211 extinguishers are on the market-at least in the US. I'd assume that fire safety places can refill, but that would require an inquiry to such.

Default HALON 1211

ThANKS Ed

Halon 1211 is a 2.5 pound fire extinguisher - Hand Held model with a Sprayer Nozel for cars.

I have read they are ideal but there are / is the issue of environmental concerns.

I have been told this unit will not destroy our paint if the car were to have say an engine or electrical fire.

A few years back some racing and DE Members here on RL were recommending the halon 1211

Now I would like to know what is being recommended ?

The \halon 1211 is still available for purchase on ebay.

I wonder if it can be serviced in the united states?

I have that model by Safecraft. It's a nice looking unit too since it's chrome plated.

I believe it can be refilled but not with Halon.

Most good-sized fire extingusher service companies can legally recharge your extinguisher with reclaimed HALON. They should give you credit for any HALON remaining in your extinguisher and only charge you for what they put in. Depending on the age of your unit, they may require a pressure test, new o-rings for the valve, etc. Yes, it's expensive but miniscule compared to the damage a CO2 unit can wreak on your vehicle.

Default Halon 1211

Hello Mark

Thanks for sharing!

Thats one heck of a Read - wow! That article Hits Home!

I will take some time to consider all of that - I am a Newbie But...but I will also look into Safecraft System amongst the Many Others being discussed.

An acquaintance is offering me the Sensor type 1211 with a bracket - I think I will take that One to start. Hopefuly that enables me to qualify for DE?

Or atleast I have a Mounting point. Then find another Extinguisher with a Nozzle type sprayer - next to discover about Safecraft vs Halon.

Being in the great white North and enduring the coldest winter ever I too have to rationalize some of the same coinsiderations you do.
Regards
Tom
