Rear fog lights

Rear fog lights
Have read the DIY of installing the rear fog lights into the center lens. My question is why do you have to splice the existing wires on the center lens when I can use a second harness add the bulbs, run a power source from the switch to the separate wires of the additional harness and go with that. The fog lights would act independent of the back up light harness as it would be run on its own harness, eliminating the need to cut wires and tap into the other power source

The splice is for the ground as the area around the center light is plastic (bumper). Power comes all the way from the dash.
I didn't splice the wiring harness. Instead I drilled a hole in the front fog light switch and running the power wires (fog lights and switch light) from the hole in the front fog switch to the rear fog light switch.
On the rear I ran a ground wire to the factory ground by the shock tower to the rear fogs along with the power from the front dash.

My installation was with a second switch for rear fogs. If you go over the DIY, http://p-car.com/diy/rfl/ . You need fog light power either from the fuse box or from the front fog light switch to the second fog light switch. Then a wire from the second switch to the rear lights. You also need a ground wire to the rear lights. I used the factory ground at the shock towers or you can slice the wiring for the ground.
Main reason for my modification to the p-car DIY, was to avoid cutting the wiring harness and it's reversible.
